2026 Season | Week 4 | Gameday Chatter Thread | Cowboys @ Texans | 10/04/2026

He's clearly really good to just drop in and play like he did.

Reminds me of when we signed Ryan McNeil in the early 2000's for one season and he just came in in the 11th hour before the season started and started blanketing guys. Then the Chargers signed him away the next season and he had 8 picks for them. I was so bitter we wouldn't keep him.

People forget how good that dude was for us on a 1 year deal, but that was one of the single best seasons by a Cowboys CB in recent memory.

And yeah, it sucks we couldn't keep him, but if we had, it would have been a waste anyway because he just would have rotted away on the 2001 and 2002 Dave Campo teams.

Pepperidge Farm (and I) remember that and our solution which was moving Izell Reese to corner.

I remember being sold on Buck in an Eagles Cowboys game back in the early 2000s. 2005 I think. Terry Glenn caught a TD pass early. Buck yelling Glenn on the TD reception, I was like, this mofo brings the excitement. He's a keeper.

Here it is, at 21:21.

Joe Buck echoing his Dad with the Cardinals when he dropped the "We will see you tomorrow night" in the 2011 World Series is what I will remember about him. I grew up a Cardinals fan because of my Dad who was from that area.

Sorry Rangers fans. :unsure

Yeah, I don't get the Buck hate at all.

All announcers have SOME annoying tendencies. People made fun of Madden's over the top mannerisms back in the day as well. But he was the best ever.

There isn't a play by play guy in pro football in the last 25 years with a better combination of voice, excitement, and accuracy than Buck. Again, including Michaels. Michaels is a Hall of Famer but he comes up short in the excitement category compared to Buck.

I used to hate Buck but I've mostly gotten over it. He definitely makes snide remarks that annoy me sometimes. But overall he has pretty good situational awareness and a good amount of excitement.

Buck Jr can't carry Al Michaels' jock strap.

Al may be older now, and that gets everyone, but he's still a legend. Buck has turned down some of his douchiness lately, but it's still there under the surface.

Probably, but honestly it's been long enough now that he's been mailing it in that I barely remember what prime Al Michaels was like.

I see no love for Al Michaels anywhere in this thread.

He’s the best next to Summerall when it comes to play by play.

I love Summerall for his proximity to Madden and Madden elevated him quite a bit. But I don't think Summerall was an all timer otherwise.

I like play by play where the announcer is excited when big plays happen. Summerall was way too subdued for my taste.

That's what I loved about Pat!

His style was unique and no one has ever sounded even remotely close to him.

For me, Pat is the GOAT.

Pat and John paired perfectly together. Played off each other perfectly. Complimented each other perfectly. The excited chaos of Madden melded with the calm of Summerall. Perfectly.

They both would have been successful without each other. But together, they were…

Perfect.

I wished we could have a booth of Jimmy the Greek and Howard Cosell.

My favorite Joe Buck call in a Cowboys game:

Yeah that is up there.

No one calling games for either Sunday network can approach that at the moment.

Listen, I like Jim Nance too, but he's got the same problem, to the extent it's a problem, as Michaels.

He doesn't get you hyped. He's more of a calming presence. Too soft.

I like the play by play guy to bring some of the excitement to the call.

Summerall wasn't loud, but, his steely, almost robotic cadence actually worked for hype. It would like rise in tenor as something important was happening. Just chilling.

This is fucking ridiculous. Get this motherfucker off of the field. He can't block. He can't catch. He can't hold onto to the ball when he does happen to catch it. He can't run for shit. Why is he playing besides that contract?

I'm beginning to think there are no men in his family. That's embarrassing. I would put him on blast when film is reviewed.
