Cowboys trade for Porter Jr.

WTF?

Let's just give away all our picks for rentals. I don't care if it's 2028, that's still a second.

I have to wonder if they're souring on Revel a bit. Maybe they're thinking he's never going to stay healthy.

But what's our biggest hope on defense this year? Barham and Downs, and probably Lawrence later in the year. Draft picks. So let's trade them all away.

Also... He was holding out there because of his contact, right? Are we sure he's just going to play here when nothing on that has been resolved? Or apparently is going to be anytime soon?

It sounds like he'll be playing this weekend, I think maybe he's just happy to be out of Pittsburgh and will hopefully play his best to maximize the deal he gets after the season.

In terms of the picks, it's probably like a 40 spot difference if he walks in FA given the comp pick we'll get in the same draft. If we resign him we got a borderline Pro Bowl CB for a 2nd rounder two years from now, so he'd be part of that young defensive group with Barham, Downs, Lawrence and so forth.

I’m not fully convinced our defensive coordinator isn’t a moron, but is he a good scheme fit? Not that we should be seeking scheme fits for the worst defense in the league, but when they suck, I prefer they suck in a consistent, infuriating manner.

I haven't even watched this guy play. Someone tell me how to feel about the acquisition as far as just on the field play. Watched a few highlight clips, he's long.

He's probably somewhere in the range of the 8th to 12th best CB in the league, not one of the truly elites but a guy on the Pro Bowl fringe.

Very physical/aggressive to the point of going over board at times (grabby penalties) but he can hold up physically against basically any WR in the league.

Hasn't given up a TD in about two years.

The good news for me is, and I know I'm in the minority on this, but I'd rather pay him than Pickens.

I just hope we didn't give a second for what is intended to be a total rental from the start. And I know we can tag him, but he does have that back that gets sore when he doesn't like his contact situation.

The Pickens/Porter dynamic is interesting because I think after this we'll definitely extend one of them, I'm just not sure which. It's most likely an either/or situation, although Jerry seems to be getting more aggressive since the Parsons trade, so I wouldn't rule out extending both if they both play like difference makers this year.

But at least we'll most likely be keeping one young, foundational sort of player as opposed to just letting Pickens walk and pocketing the cap space as I worried about.

I mean the good news is we really need him to cover Nico Collins. So the one player on the Texans who really worried me, we now have a guy capable of lining up with someone like that.

He locked him up pretty good in the playoffs last year, gave up something like 2 catches for 15 yards, including covering him in man out of the slot several times.

Collins is the exact type of WR you pay a guy like Porter to cover with his size/length.

I think that's ultimately why we made the trade. We just didn't have a corner on the roster that you could count on being able to cover a top flight WR. Not that Porter is some sort of an elite corner but he is at least a true #1 corner, or at least he was last year.

I like the addition but I always hate giving up draft picks. Even if it makes sense to add a guy now and lose a 50/50 chance of a successful draft pick down the road, it still hurts because I love the draft. But logically speaking the move makes sense. And honestly we have the cap room to extend him right now if we wanted. You have to figure there is no way we let Pickens and Porter walk in the offseason. So at least one of those guys is going to get extended.

But at the end of the day Schotty is still our head coach. So it also kind of feels like a pointless move if the head coach is going to shrink in big games and big game moments.

Maybe we can free up the money to sign him by ditching Bland.

That's EXACTLY what I'm thinking.

Bland is overrated and overpaid. If Porter has a heck of a year, I'd be completely in favor of cutting Bland and using whatever money we free up from that move and allocating it to keeping Porter.

Yup.....otherwise, I'd start feeling really optimistic about what this season could ultimately turn into.

We just have to hope this can be one of those good Garrett type seasons where enough good things just come together for one year.
