Rangers finally get back to .500 and are now tied for the division lead. What a shit division it has become.

Nah, what baseball needs is for the ancients to stop holding on for dear life to anachronistic relics like batting average, which is among the dumbest stats in sports.

I do agree that analytics have gotten out of control in baseball, but batting average isn't the stat to be nostalgic for.

I don't know man.... Your best hitters are in the high .200s now.

It's crazy to me that sub-300 guys are considered amongst the elite now.

I'd love to see what the statistics say about '90s/2000s hitters who were in the .300's getting on base compared to today's .200's guys.

It's awful.

It's like the 1999 NFC East.

Batting average ignores walks, which are extremely important. Batting average is a dumb stat.

I don’t agree with that. It used to be if you hit .250, you were viewed as a defensive guy only, hitting at the bottom of the order. Today, that guy is one of your better hitters. Guys in the allstar game with lower batting averages than even that.

It’s sickening seeing starting rosters littered with low .200 hitters.

Right, but then why do you need batting average at all? OBP tells you everything batting average does, plus walks.
I don't know. Sports has 10,000 acronym statistical categories. You have climbed this hill before and I still don't know why you feel this way. BA is a pretty sound statistical way of judging a batter's consistency. I'm not sure why it is of teh debil to you.

Batting average should be completely ignored. Just because we've done things wrong for 100 years doesn't mean we should keep being wrong.

Kyle Schwarber is a perfect example of why batting average doesn't matter.

Schwarber is hitting .236. Traditionally that looks like a poor hitter.

But Schwarber also has 95 walks and a .351 OBP. That tells a way more complete story, because avoiding outs is generally the most important thing for a hitter so it's silly to ignore the fact that Schwarber is 6th in the league in walks. Add in that he leads the league in HRs and his batting average is completely irrelevant.

Because it's horrendous. See my Schwarber example above. Batting average is an insanely dumb stat.

I will not sit idly by while heretics diminish the importance of the Triple Crown.

Imagine there are 2 stats.

One tells you X. The other tells you X plus Y.

But for some strange reason everyone wants to use the stat that only tells you X and ignore Y, even though Y is a very useful thing to know.

It's really weird that there's any resistance at all to this. Why would anyone want to look at an incomplete stat?

It's not heresy it's evolution.

"I will not sit idly by while heretics diminish the importance of lanterns for lighting a room." Same energy.
