The Outrage Thread

We are hitting record numbers on oil exports. Why the hell are we not keeping some of that here to relieve the American people at the pump? Why haven't we opened the reserves to give some relief? Sure, the government makes a ton of money on those exports, but it's not helping me or you. This has been annoying me and maybe someone here can explain why we aren't taking care of our own people first?
They sell to whoever pays the most, same as any other business. When Venezuela gets back up and rolling the way it was prior to all the companies getting their set ups stolen by their government it will be a bit easier. I will likely be working in Venezuela this time next year.

Because oil is sold on the global market. Doesn't matter if we are pumping all of the oil we consume.

At least that's the way I understand it.

I guess that's my question, though. Fuck the highest bidder, why are we not keeping the oil here until we have at least gotten our gas prices down? Is it mandated we put it on the global market? If so, that's retarded. It's our oil. We should be able to do what we please with it.

Because it's not state-owned, it's owned by private companies who don't care about such things.

If it helps any, I do know that the price of light sweet like we have here is significantly cheaper than the Brent market in Europe. So they're getting hit more than we are.

Because unlike some countries, our oil companies are not state owned. They are private businesses and asking them to not make as much money as they can is against capitalism.

I get that, but it is part of the country's natural resources. I'm all about the free market as everyone is very well aware, but when it comes to oil shouldn't there be some kind of stipulation that would mandate a certain percentage of oil to stay here in certain "emergency" type situations? I mean, (and yes, I know this is an extreme example) if our people here were hurting because of a water shortage wouldn't we keep more here before selling it overseas? They are both natural resources used for daily life, so why are they treated differently?

Let me be perfectly clear about the question I am asking. I absolutely do not want our oil to be state-owned. At all. The government fucks up everything it touches. I am simply asking why a market regulation has not been put in place to protect/provide for America first?

There might be something like that -- we know that's part of what the strategic reserve is for -- but I doubt this present situation meets the "emergency" threshold.

I agree, and that's why I put it in quotes. I just wasn't sure what word to use to convey this current situation.
