War With Iran

I have a buddy that's stationed at Grafenwohr in Germany. I talked to him the other day, and he said locals are in a panic that Trump will pull the entire US force out. (personally, I don't think that will ever happen) Their main concern is how it will put a massive dent into their economy. Germany has around 40,000 American troops. Not only what the individual soldiers add to the economy, but what the US military spends. Along with all the jobs the German population would lose that are in direct support of the US military.

AI Overview

A U.S. troop withdrawal from Germany would cause localized economic shocks, particularly in regions surrounding bases like Ramstein, threatening jobs in retail, housing, and construction. While the overall German economy is large enough to absorb the shock, communities heavily reliant on US personnel spending would suffer. However, this could accelerate German defense spending to compensate, driving up defense expenditure to over

, impacting its fiscal policy.

Localized Economic Consequences

  • Job Loss & Spending: The departure of U.S. troops and their families would cause a drop in income for local businesses that rely on their spending (rent, entertainment, services).
  • Regional Economic Impact: Areas near major hubs like Ramstein Air Base and Landstuhl Medical Center, which employ thousands of locals, would be most affected.
Broader Economic and Strategic Effects
  • Shift in Defense Spending: A withdrawal would necessitate a major increase in German military expenditure, potentially placing pressure on the national budget to fill the gap.
  • Increased Fiscal Responsibility: Germany is already increasing its defense budget to over

of its GDP, a trend that would likely accelerate in the absence of a US presence.
  • Diminished Security Framework: Analysts suggest a complete withdrawal could leave the European security landscape vulnerable and cost European allies heavily to reorganize their defense sector.
Mixed Opinions on Impact
  • Symbolic vs. Material: While many consider the removal of 5,000+ troops a significant financial hit, others, such as Quora users and some analysts, debate whether this is a minor logistical shift or a massive economic disruption, per discussions on Reddit.
  • Military Restructuring: A removal would force a complete overhaul of German defense procurement and logistics.
Key Economic Figures
  • Germany hosts roughly 35,000-40,000 U.S. troops.
    • A previous study found that a complete U.S. exit could cost European allies up to \(344\) billion dollars, as cited on Stars and Stripes.
    • The presence was previously estimated to contribute over \(2\) billion dollars in annual economic activity, according to iamexpat.de. [1, 2, 3]

Sucks for the local people, but I really don't give a shit. Germany wants to play this game of allegiance switching, so it's high time we get our troops out of there. Just one more place we won't have to deploy troops that will have to be away from their families. It does suck for the local people, but this whole "we will back anyone in NATO, unless it's the USA" thing should piss every American off. Fuck that, bring our boys and girls home. We shouldn't even factor in what it will do to their defense spending or overall economy. That's their burden to bear.

Germany is an accompanied tour. Families are allowed to go with. A lot of guys want it. My wife hoped I would get it, but it was never offered. And I doubt we will take the majority of our troops out of there. It’s too much of a strategic advantage having them there.

I did not know that they could take their families. That's awesome. And I understand the strategy behind it. I'm just pissed at Germany right now. Same with Italy and Spain. They can all kiss my ass. I don't expect them to join the fighting by any means, but to deny flight landings and use of their other military ground resources flies right in the face of what it should mean to be in an alliance.
