New Defensive Coordinator - Christian Parker

Right, nothing he said was revolutionary or particularly insightful. Pretty much every new coach is going to say he's flexible - no one comes out and says I'm stuck on one scheme and players have to fit to it, even when that's true.

My overall takeaway was mainly that he's a serious guy. He just talked football and was very direct about it. Pretty big contrast to Schotty right next to him talking about himself and schmoozing the room like he just took a $29 Dale Carnegie course.

But, maybe those "great people skills" are working on Jerry, which is what really matters. It was nice that no Jones was in sight.
 
So maybe things have changed a little, but Jerry can't openly acknowledge that things have changed. Whatever. I still think this was one of the best run coaching hires we've had in a long time. The thoroughness, the speed of the decision to let Eberflus go, and talking to coaches that never would have received an interview in the past. Maybe it doesn't work out, but at least the process was better.

It's funny how much we forget this stuff in our zeal to have any sliver of hope that things are different now.

Unfortunately they're not.

I actually don't agree with the No C quote, although I didn't watch it so maybe there's more context there.

But I don't agree that players are more important than scheme.

I do think you want as many good players as possible and you want to tailor your scheme to your players strengths.

But I think it's way harder to find a lot of good players to run your scheme if your scheme sucks.

A great scheme is a sort of cheat code to elevating mediocre players.

The problem wasn't that it's scheme first, the problem was that it was a shitty scheme with shitty instruction, shitty communication, and shitty players.

In the PC Parker basically said great players can play in any scheme but it's natural to tailor a scheme around the strengths and weaknesses of players, so the dumbo media guy working for the team was definitely editorializing and bullshitting.

We had better be. Our nigh insane fixation on drafting OL in the first round coupled with the Parsons trade has left that part of the team crippled.

Trading down will allow us to tap some semi-decent depth at the position and staff our rush-starved 3-4. If we draft straight up, we need to land a star edge rusher and another defensive impact player. Then pick up the best CB, Edge, or LB at 112.

It’s not enough to fully staff the defense even with the best coaching, but it can get us a long way, kind of like when we dumped Nolan, hired Quinn, and drafted Parsons.

However if we trade down from 20 and from 12 both (if Styles doesn’t fall), we can really load up and start a serious 1 year turnaround. We also need to take shots at RB and OT as we need depth there too.

We can do all of it if we’re willing to move to the bottom of round 1/top of round two. A combo of TJ Parker, CJ Allen, and Zion Young would be a really good start and take off a ton of pressure, while not trading and drafting say Styles and Parker would get us a difference maker but puts greater pressure on pick 112 to be an immediate starter. We’d also have almost no flexibility to take a shot at RB and/or OT.

Trading down from both spots can net us multiple 3rd 4th and 5th rounders while keeping our top picks at the bottom 1st and early 2nd. That’s already like 8 picks in the top five rounds
