New Defensive Coordinator - Christian Parker

What's going on with Orr? Is he waiting to see if he gets a DC position before joining our staff or what?

Two things on the defensive coaching staff, the ESPN article about Parker that was posted yesterday said that we tried to bring Pettine on in some role, which is something I wondered about a few weeks ago since he was the DC in GB when Parker first got into the league. Pettine supposedly retired but hopefully as the season approaches in the spring/summer he gets the bug and they can bring him on in some sort of trumped up role like Leslie has in Seattle.

Secondly, it seems there are only 1-2 spots still open on the staff, namely a traditional LB (or 3-4 ILB) coach. We have about four secondary coaches (Smith, Ansley, Muschamp, Thompson), with Ansley seemingly being the ringleader as the pass game coordinator, Dixon on the DL, the Georgia guy as a "OLB coach", and that's it.

My guess is that they're waiting on Orr for that spot and then they'll be mostly done with the defensive staff.

I've been impressed with Schottenheimer bringing in younger coordinators under him. I'd have expected him to come out with boring retreads.

Parker has a solid pedigree and seems like a guy with a good mind for the game who can motivate the players. Hard to find much fault in this hire.

I could see Pettine coming to training camp for a bit and observing in some sort of consultant role. Maybe stay through the season watching games, giving feedback to Parker, etc.

He's only 59.

Yea I don't know anything about him but he's young and was a DC for a decent college team so I guess that's fine.

Wonder what happened with Orr.

Fascinated by the hires we've made under Schotty. In a good way.

No retreads. Obviously, Eberflus and his guys were all Jerry. Then after one historically bad year Schotty told Jerry time to move on and let's do it my way.

Young guys. Multiple college coaches who have had success. College coaches need to teach. Schotty wants teachers. He's interviewed a ton of college coaches. Just not used to this. Other than when Jerry hired a bunch of college coaches as his first hire. Go figure.

Any other spots open on defensive side?

Maybe they weren't too enamored with him or the job he did at Baltimore. Not like the Ravens or Harbaugh are banging down the door to hire him.

I doubt that. Why talk to him at all then? And Schottenheimer coached with him before so he'd already know if he thought he was a bad coach.

My guess is he's being selective about where he goes. I'm assuming Baltimore is still paying him anyway.

Maybe they were more impressed by the SMU guy but weren't sure if he would take the job. Or Orr thinks someone will make him a DC and he thinks that's still an option. Even though I don't think it is.

So they're not supposed to interview multiple people? There are a lot of guys we have interviewed that haven't been hired by us.

One year overlap in Jacksonville for them. That's not enough.
