That could happen again but I think a good amount of those collapses had to do with Quinn's style and the lack of nuance/scheme soundness.

I can't think of a more cringe example of this then that loser who yelled out "Suns in 4" after that brawl at an NBA playoff basketball game a years back.

Overall the front 7 looked way more fundamentally sound than it did under Quinn, that could be due to Zimmer's focus on stopping the run, not wholly relying on 295 lb. DT's, or just the fact that we've actually invested in LB's, but it was apparent.

The one play that really drove this home for me was 3rd and 4 around midfield in the 3rd when we were up 27-10. How often over the last few years have we complained about being in 2nd and 7 or 3rd and 5, normally passing downs, and offenses would run a simple draw and pop it for 5-7 because our pass rush was recklessly flying upfield?

That 3rd and 4 was the exact same situation where we'd have given up a soft 5 under Quinn, but yesterday it went for a loss of 2, put them in 4th and 6 and led to a stop.

The pass rush didn't look quite as dynamic as it did under Quinn but I think the floor for the defense is much higher. There will surely be a few tough games and growing pains but I think Zimmer's defense is just structurally better than Quinn's and I'm glad to see the players taking to it.

It goes to show that no matter how good you are or how young you are, you can't take all this time away and bounce back from it.

Watson missed the entire 2021 season because of his legal troubles, and since then, he's never played in more than 6 games a season.

And last season, when he was finally starting to show glimpses of the guy he was in Houston? He gets hurt and had to miss the rest of the season.

This is exactly why I was always amazed at how good Josh Gordon was every time he'd come back from another one of his lengthy suspensions. He would come back and ball out as if nothing had ever happened.

I can't think of another player in recent memory who could do that.

As for Watson, I think he's just missed way too much time to build any consistency and I think it's just way too much to come back from now.

I get that but his drop-off is too much for just that.

The defense peaking early under Quinn and then slowly devolving from there became a habit over the years though.

It happened in 2022 towards the end of the regular season but they picked it back up for the playoffs. I think it was a mix of looking better than they were with a lead and when going up against the really shitty QB/OL combos (4 against the Giants/Skins alone), and not being able to adjust when offenses looked to protect themselves with the run/play action.

Quinn's defenses were all built on aggression, "flying around" and getting upfield, and seemingly didn't have a Plan B when that failed. The fact that we were beaten so consistently with little bullshit draws between 2022-23 makes that pretty obvious.

Zimmer has put together way more top tier defenses, with different personnel, over a longer period of time and at more stops than Quinn has and I think that should tell you something.

Quinn's resume is basically Seattle for 2-3 years with a historically rare confluence of factors (multiple HoF-caliber young guys all coming together at once combined with their insane homefield advantage) and then Dallas for 2-3 years with a generational player in Parsons.

Zimmer put together elite defenses in Cincinnati and Minnesota, and arguably even Dallas for a year or two, across a 20+ year period and without the benefit of guys like Sherman, Thomas, Wagner and Parsons. His best players have been guys like Eric Kendricks, Anthony Barr, Harrison Smith, Danielle Hunter, Geno Atkins and Carlos Dunlap.

Not a single HOF'er in that group.
 
Overshown played so well you can see why they were bummed when he went down last year.

I have no idea what has changed with how we treat injuries but both he and Diggs looked like nothing happened.

That would affect anyone, I think.
