For a business man pretending like if you pay someone more they will perform better logically makes no sense. Just because Dak is the highest paid isn't going to suddenly make him the best player in the NFL.
Now, think real hard to the last time you had an owner decry a player for being the top paid player and not elevating performance?

To answer Simp, it’s laziness and failure to find a different interest. I really should go do something better like play an instrument or fishing/hunting, but NFL is inexpensive, couch potato entertainment.
Speaking of that, and not necessarily on the topic of the Cowboys sucking so far this year, but how many of you re-think spending so much time on this team, even including this board?

I find myself doing that. Not that I'm going to stop wasting time typing posts like this, but I find myself more and more thinking I should be doing more productive things. I'm about the same age as a lot of us here and getting older is part of it, but it's not just that.

Just wondering how many others think that more and more. Obviously it's easier when the team craps out, but I mean beyond that.

I definitely debate it but ultimately I still have too much free time and enjoy talking football too much to completely leave.

Good, I'm glad. You're younger than the guys I was thinking of anyway, and a part of this is age. I do still love football, and hope that never changes.

And I'm not going to stop, either. If I don't have anything better to do on Sundays, I'm definitely going to watch. Just maybe put more attention on other things during the week.

Back to simp's OP... Is there some plan here, even a misguided one? I haven't looked that deeply into our cap, but some have claimed that there's some cap to be cleared by punting on this year.. Is there any truth to that?

I don't see why it would be true and think it's just being cheap and all the other things we've talked about, but maybe I'm missing something.
I don't know if it's necessarily about opening up a bunch of cap space moving forward, but I think their idea was to shed salary or not take on much veteran salary (Tyron, Biadasz, Armstrong, Gilmore, Gallup, etc.) and use this year to get young rookie-contract players (Guyton, Beebe, Kneeland, Tolbert, Brooks, etc.) acclimated to the NFL so that you could speed up their learning curve and hopefully be in a position a year or two down the road where you have developed several starters on rookie deals that will allow you to pay guys like Dak, Lamb and Parsons.

I think they knew doing that would make them less competitive this year, but I'm sure they still expected to be around a 10 win team, and they still might be. But I think the idea was to pull back in 2024 with an eye on developing the roster for 2025 and beyond, while not locking in multi-year deals aside from Dak/Lamb/Parsons that will impact the next HC.

It's insane but I'd be shocked if it wasn't part of their thought process.

On the team? I've already scaled back.

Even in the good seasons the last few years I've missed games.

That changed for me way back in 2012 or so.

I think even if the Cowboys were to somehow return to being a dynasty and returned to being the kings of the NFL, I don't think I'll ever be the fan I used to be before I soured on things.

As for my activity on this board? I guess that'll depend on how much my interest in football as a whole dwindles although I enjoy talking about other random stuff with this group as much as I do Cowboys related stuff.... It's just that the Cowboys activity is far more frequent than the other topics.

I wish the NCAA chat was more active on Saturdays. If it were, I'd be spending a lot more time in there.

Posting here is also somewhat intertwined with the reason we root for the team, giving up on the Cowboys completely would be like giving up on our past to an extent and I think the board is a piece of that. Even the most cynical person here would be glued to the screen if we made the NFCC next year, so while I think different people pull back and disassociate themselves to varying degrees, I think there's always a piece of it that'll be there.

And for me I've been posting on these boards for about 20 years so I don't think I'll ever be fully gone unless the board itself is gone.

Great, good answer.

But it's really about just spending less and not actually getting out from under some cap problem. Of course paying several free agents this year with ballooning contracts would make it harder in the future, I don't mean that. But more that young players on rookie contracts are (obviously) cheaper the next few years.

Yea, and if I'm being honest I wouldn't have much of an issue with the strategy if they had shown they were willing to make a significant move here or there in FA.

Kind of shitting on a year is idiotic but in general I get the need to balance your salary structure, the problem is I know they aren't going to do fuck all with any of it besides overpay their own players.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to get people to post here less. :lol

We need each other as a support group to get through all of Jerry's crap.

Plus we'll always have the Nostalgia thread... when people aren't posting losses in it. :unsure

I started playing guitar again and can honestly say I'm better now than I was in my 20's. It's a shame we didn't have Youtube back then because it accelerates your learning curve significantly if you know what to practice. Now I just need to find a band that practices on Sunday.

TBH, I think I have wasted a lot of time on this team. I come to this board for the guys that are here.

Yeah I don't view coming on here as a waste of time. It's more just a way to chat with people to pass the time.

Now prepping all morning for a game or getting upset after a loss. Those are wastes of my time. I no longer spend my entire Sundays on the NFL. I'll watch a game but that's about it.

I'm not saying coming to this board is a waste of time. I'm saying I have invested too much fucking energy in this god damn team.

i’ve been playing guitar for 40 years, and you are 100 percent correct about youtube. It makes it so much easier to see how things are played. Couldve used that a lot back in the 80s when I was trying to slow down a vinyl or cassette to hear a guitar part. Brutal.
