Hell, I'd bet if we dug deep enough, most people would have somebody of color in their ancestry.It's an old rule/law dating back to the 1600s that essentially assigned minority status to anyone who has a black ancestor. Doesn't matter if it's a parent or a great-great-great-grandparent. If it was traceable that you had a black ancestor, you were considered black in the south. That's why individuals who are mixed (black and white) pretty much always get classified as black to this day.
Just like most people of color probably have a white guy hiding in the woodpile somewhere along the line.
