If it was traceable that you had a black ancestor, you were considered black in the south. That's why individuals who are mixed (black and white) pretty much always get classified as black to this day.

That's really messed up. Didn't know that was a thing but it looks like it was ruled unconstitutional by SCOTUS in 1967 which is good. On a lighter (no pun intended) note, by that very standard my honkey ass would be considered black, since my great, great, great, great, great, great grandmother on my dad's side was a black slave.
