After I posted that, I found all kinds of discussion on Reddit about it, even all these years later. Seems most people think it was the Rekall implant... One thing I forgot was the tech saying as they're strapping him in, "Blue skies on Mars, that's different." And of course that's how the movie ends. But it is a fun question.

Personally I think the entire thing was a fantasy, because jackhammer laborers don't end up with Sharon Stones. :unsure

That's what I really like about it, that there's no real answer but it's interesting to think about.

I watched that Hillbilly Effigy movie.

Odd I had never heard of it since it was a Ron Howard joint.

I watched it a few years back when it was initially released on Netflix. It was a good movie.

I'm surprised that you never heard of it. They gave it a pretty solid PR/media push leading up to its release.

Twisters was just ok, but I appreciate it was a throwback to 90s style movies. More like that would restore the movie industry.

That is good to hear, I might check it out.

I agree about the 90s style movies. They were escapist and did not seek to challenge your values every fucking second.

Now, every other thing is set to either appease or trigger part of the audience. And a lot of times, the target audience is a lot fucking smaller than they think it is.

Perhaps they are figuring out that remaking and repackaging tropes slapped with a Woke label is not how you appeal to the masses.

Or maybe they just suck at writing and casting movies anymore.
