Dallas is going to pay 35m this season one way or another. That’s settled by the franchise tag. If a deal isn’t struck for a contract we will still see from his performance and whether he will be worth top tier payment. At that time he can make demands based on actual performance If he doesn’t impress then he will entertain a different offer or maybe decide to look elsewhere. Either way putting the franchise tag on him puts the onus on him to deliver. From my perspective there is no reason to do anything further this season. Cease negotiations and see if he can make the grade to top tier.
There is a reason no one plays with their QB on a franchise tag. Other players take notice that their leader is gone in a year. Can't kick it down the road forever.

It sucks and I'm pretty disappointed that Dak is trying to squeeze every last inch of cap space (same with zeke), but we're pretty much over a barrel.

Doesn’t mean he is gone. It’s a simple matter of communication and make sure that it’s about business. It doesn’t have to be the kiss of death. The team is intelligent enough to understand what is going on.

So if he delivers, say, a top 5 QB performance, then pay him top tier money?

No, top tier money will be 40 mill then, you expect to pay him the 33 you offered this year...
:lol

Good luck. You know that's not how it works. If he performs top 5, then he'll want top 5 money for that time. So would you, and so would I.

That’s my point, last year they wanted to pay him journeyman dollars because he wasn’t leading a passing focused offense, it turned into a passing offense (one of the top ones), and now they don’t want to pay top passer money (which will change next season and the one after that and so on) unless he proves to be a “tier1” passer, next year it will be because Mahomes and so and so are better...
Truth is Dak is the top QB up for a contract right now and as such he is the market setter. He might not be next year but that just means the other guys number will be higher and might even pull Dak along.

I wonder if O'Brien would trade him for Watson straight up?

ok, so now define 'top 5' performance.
You want me to define something that no one can Agee on. Good luck with that. It’s up to the guy who writes the check that has to be satisfied.

and yet you said to pay the man if he delivers said top 5 performance. As if there are agreed upon measures by which you would deem him worthy of said top 5 pay. How can that be?

No f'n way. Dak Prescott will never be mistaken for the league's greatest passer, but he looks like Peyton Manning compared to Cam Newton. Newton's biggest claim to fame was his ability to run with the ball. And he is fading pretty fast in that department.
I'm mostly playing Devil's Advocate, but Dak hasn't proven he's an indispensable talent that's going to lift some other team unless they bring their own ridiculous OL, ridiculous RB, and elite WR corps.

If you have those things, Dak can light it up. Well no shit!

Let's see Dak head to Denver in FA and do the same thing he did in Dallas. :lol

Because he's caught in his own double-standard.

Just stop. You have zero idea of what the hell would happen. Just like you had no idea when saying we would get the same production from Cam Newton as we do Dak. But keep on keepin' on playing that Devil's Advocate. :lol

So we can be the next Denver? Scrambling to find a quarterback because they - in front of us - jumped up to draft all-time bust Paxton Lynch?
