I could be wrong, but the team signing them doesn't give the draft pick compensation, right? The league just gifts the team losing the coach with a compensatory pick.

But it's stupid. Sounds to me that teams would be less willing to promote a minority coach within, in hopes that another team hires them away for a promotion so they could receive the picks.
That's correct. But if you're deciding between two coaches. They are equal in your mind. Coach A would give the Eagles an extra third round comp pick. Coach B gives no one anything. Would you want to give the Eagles extra free draft capital? I wouldn't.

No I wouldn’t. But that kind of furthers my point. We wouldn’t want to take them to give the eagles extra draft picks, and if the same scenario was there for the eagles, they might promote whitey over the minority. Keep them lower because teams can only hire away coaches with a promotion. Meaning if they had a white LBer coach and a minority DB coach they were considering promoting to D coordinator, they promote whitey. In the hopes someone hires the minority for D coordinator. And they’d get compensation.
