Somewhat, but part of it is on coaching. It's their job to drill the key rules into their heads for exact situations like that.

You see teams all the team waiving guys off after a blocked punt or FG with nobody getting near the ball, this moron was running at it like he was going to return it for a TD.

He's dumb, sure, but it's on the coaches to make sure every guy out there knows exactly what to do in unique situations.

If he doesn't already know that he shouldn't be on a professional team.

Bullshit. He's a professional football player. Been playing most his life. Has practiced. Participated in training camp. Played in games.

And forgets a simple fucking rule.
Or the coaches aren't emphasizing special situations enough, we'll never know, but given how sloppy this team has been most of the year I have a few guesses who is to blame.

Remember when Leon Lett lost that Thanksgiving Day game?

God damn, we had some awful fucking coaching back then.

Of course they should know all the rules, but some players are smarter than others, that's just how it is. That's why coaches like players who don't do dumb stuff (see Sam Williams, but at least Sam has some talent).

If we were 11-3 I wouldn't be as quick to blame coaching, instead we've watched a lost season with systemically poor coaching throughout.

The ST's in particular have been bad except for a few splash Turpin plays. You have about 4 fake punts gone wrong and I'm pretty sure we had about 4-5 ST's penalties in the SF game.

Oh. So we get to pick and choose when someone is at fault?

Checks out.

I will say I still think Bones is a good coach, and our ST has made some plays, but they've also made a bunch of boneheaded plays the last several weeks. Think of the dumb fake punts, blocked FG, and other frickups.

Doesn't matter, they'll all be gone next year anyway.

Yea, you kinda have to look at context with things like this, it could be a fluke or it could be shitty coaching, or any number of other things.

None of this is happening in a vacuum. I also wouldn't be surprised if Jimmy roasted his ST's coach after that game, to act like it's 100% on the player is idiotic.

Are you sure it's legal to take that stuff into account when forming an opinion though?

From what I've heard you can only consider what happened in a vacuum on that one play and that's it.

I actuality bet he knew he shouldn't touch it but for greedy and thought he was going to make a play. Just as dumb either way.
Yeah, I don't think you're wrong.

In fact, Juanyeh Thomas said something to similar effect in regards to the onside kick he returned for a TD vs Washington.

He said something like he knew he should have just gone down but saw daylight ahead of him and decided to return it.

It's quite possible that's what happened tonight too.

It's 100% on the player.

As soon as he touched it I literally said "oh no" out loud. I knew immediately it was incredibly dumb.

Nobody coached me about it.

You're either dumb or you're not.

I actually doubt he was greedy, he just saw that ball bouncing around and panicked. Some people keep their heads under pressure and some don't. Probably one reason why he's never been a good player.
