It could just be a "broken clock is right twice a day" situation but it does provide hope moving forward, and at the very least I think we can count on him as a decent backup NT.
He had games like that this season. The Steelers game if I remember correctly he played killer.

The problem is he doesn't consistently play like that.

Yea but that sounds like a guy who makes sense as a backup but has the potential to turn into a decent starter if he can become more consistent.

That's lightyears better than what we were thinking of Mazi a month or two ago.

What I noticed about Mazi without even watching closely was that he was around the ball more, he was running to the play, he just had more energy and want-to. That doesn't mean he's some great playmaker, but that's more than he showed before. That tells me his confidence is coming up, at least.

Yea he's also getting off the snap more normally now. It's nothing to write home about but he isn't consistently half a second late off the ball anymore.

Yeah I'm not going to cut the guy. I feel like we are a year behind on him. If he was doing this stuff as a rookie I would be like "okay I see flashes, now let's build off it". With it being year two, I'm probably not counting on a big jump into year three but I'd keep him around as the third or fourth DT on the roster.

Maybe he is a year behind because I'm not really sure what the fuck we were doing with him his rookie year. It's a shame but at least there has been a glimpse of potential.

Feh. At best, he is another Galliwaste.

Probably. We need two starting DTs not named Mazi.
Resign Osa and Golston, draft a DT in the first or second, roll with Mazi as a rotational 2-down guy, fill out the rest of the depth chart with JAG Linval Joseph types and we're good to go.

I'd like to sign BJ Hill in FA, which would mean letting Osa or Golston go, but we all know the chances of that.

Yeah I like Osa, just not sure at what cost. I prefer Golston at DE I think. But Graham, Osa, Mazi and some rotational free agent would do the trick for me.

Golston is a classic jumbo base DE who kicks inside in clear passing rushing situations, so he'd eat up some of the interior snaps, just situationally.

Yeah, I just worry that they have sort of asked him to bulk up, hey be a 3 tech, then oh hey we need you at DE. I just think it's best to focus him in at DE and he can be an interior pass rusher at times. Naturally I think he is a guy that should be between 270-280 pounds. I don't really want to mess with asking the guy to bulk up in the 290's like he is a three tech. I just don't think he is really a three tech at all.

Of course maybe we go to a 3-4 and suddenly he is probably just right for DE in that type of system.

I think Osa and Golston types just don't get resigned much here anymore. Other teams always come along and offer more for those type players than the Hillbillies will match.

That could definitely be the case, which is hilarious for an organization that prides itself on drafting.

Like yea, if you draft so well, you should be looking to keep those players during their prime as their rookie deals end. Constantly cycling through rookies that take a year or two to develop, which means they're a year or two away from leaving once they develop, is pure insanity.

Yep but it wouldn't shock me if Osa got 10 mil on the free agent market. Which is not a big deal by any means. But the Cowboys seems to only want to do cheap 1 or 2 year deals. Which is why it feels like every year we have a bunch of guys leaving. When everyone you sign is on a 1 year deal, yeah you have a lot of guys to resign.

Yeah, I think you let him walk at the end of his deal. His production is easily replaced unless he really turns it on over the next 2 years.

He is a DE, period.

If you are depending on him much inside you are doing it wrong.

He's better on the interior as a pass rusher, but yes I think he should play the majority of his snaps at DE since he's primarily a run stuffer on the edge.
