Another example of no creative thinking in this front office.

We needed a LB badly, so what do we do? We go get a guy on his last legs that Zimmer is comfortable with.

What does Philly do? They go get Baun, a guy in his prime, a guy used more as a pass rushing LB last year, get him on a cheap contract, and Fangio makes him into a pro bowler off the ball LB.

I don't know what's going on with him. He seemed so great in camp - attitude, work ethic, everything. But he's healthy enough to play and is still behind Edoga. Makes no sense.
to be fair most nfl players would be behind Edoga.

hes pretty quick to the lunchline.

Definitely worth a 4th round pick.

I think the lesson here (besides Lance being obviously not worth a 4th round pick) is that Lance should have taken every god damn snap after Dak got hurt.

The "Oh, he hasn't played enough? Let's continue to not play him" strategy has been so enormously retarded it's almost unbelievable.

Yep, guy needs reps and snaps to develop. So let's not do that when we literally have nothing to lose.

I guess they didn't want to do it until they were mathematically eliminated, which makes some sense.

I still think there's a great chance he's so bad you can't even put him out there. Either that or they kind of thought he was coming along and wanted to hide him from other teams to re-sign him cheap... but probably the former.

That's sort of the problem, you develop. He makes strides, maybe even starts to look semi competent. Then free agency hits and he leaves for a better opportunity.

So fucking stupid to use any premium pick on a guy who barely played in college. Colts are feeling that pain right now too. Parcells always said he looked for 4 year starters at QB.

The only notable QB I can think of drafted under Parcells was Drew Bledsoe. Parcells first year at New England, and Bledsoe was the #1 overall. Kind of a no brainer. What other decent QBs did he draft? 4 year or not.

But that's what you want. Because as a QB, if he looks remotely competent someone will sign him to a decent contract and you get a nice comp pick. It's exactly what you want.

But some guys are never going to develop no matter how much they play. Think Stephen McGee. That might be what Lance is.

Terrible comparison. Trey Lance is ten times the talent of Stephen McGee. His problem is just lack of experience. Small sample size in college, and was drafted too early. Then being thrown to the wolves entirely too early.

It’s not his fault the league is stupid when it comes to QBs and the niners brain cramped and took him where they did. He should have been a 3rd rounder and given a year or two to learn from the bench. Hell, even with the rush job the niners did, he STILL has less experience than QBs coming out this year.

I don’t blame Jerry for taking a flyer on him. He has talent. I blame Jerry for being stupid about it and not giving him the experience he needed to give the trade even a fighting chance of succeeding.

Being drafted where he was , was a curse not a blessing. He cost too much in money and draft capitol to take time to develop. Ideally, someone signs him to a manageable contract and gives him that time to develop. Check back in a year or two when he’s 25-26. You might have a ten year steal on your hands.

I didn't say he was Stephen McGee. Only that it's not a given that just because a player gets time, they will develop into a good player. Especially at QB, some just don't have it.

Maybe you're right about Lance, but how much time do you give him? He's had two very good QB coaches and he got so much time in preseason and he still couldn't beat out Rush. Does he have to go to a terrible team who doesn't care if they lose real games to play enough to develop?

You know the answer to that one already. Rush was already established. Veteran's have to be practically convicted of a crime to beat out by a younger guy, unless they are a high draft pick. That is deeply ingrained in this team. Even if he was Jerry's pet trade project, it was still only a 4th rounder.

I doubt he would develop.

But the point is either he DOES develop, which benefits the team, or he doesn't and you tank, which benefits the team.

But you're never going to find out with him on the bench.
