He isn't holding the ball as long looking to make big plays down field, so that's a big part of it.

But let's be real, the two biggest differences from earlier in the year is the defense playing at a good to very good level and having a consistent running game after benching Elliott.
What you said plus the strength of opponents.

I don't know that strength of opponents is making that big of a difference. In the first half of the year we lost to the Saints and Falcons, and if we played either this week I think we'd win. We're playing better right now. We might even beat the 49ers too.

I agree we are a different team now compared to then.

But so were they. Trying to do comparisons is a hard thing to do. The variables won’t allow it to be very accurate. For instance from our perspective…. How many carries has Zeke gobbled up from Rush’s offense vs Dak’s?

I want to get annoyed at this as well, but you cannot deny the offense looks different under Rush. It is like they are trying harder.
  1. Level of competition. Cooper only faced one loaded team on Philly. Dowdle played well against several average teams, nd that seriously helped Rush.
  2. Backups getting PT who are trying hard to step up. The effort shows.
  3. Dak played behind an offensive line that was about as young as it gets with a rapidly aging and declining Zack Martin. They have since settled down and are no longer green rookies.
  4. Dak faced enormous leads he couldn’t possibly dig his way out of. Emergence of Overshown and return of Bland have changed that quite a bit, albeit vs no so great teams

That last part alone was malpractice.

It would be funny if Fat Mike was like, nah, I can go coach the Bears.

The only thing is that I don't think he would be a A-lister this offseason.

I did wonder if Jerry was suddenly praising Mike so much because he realized, oh shit, Mike’s not under contract, maybe I should make sure he feels appreciated in case I want him back...

What other choice does he have? Really?

Once they did not tank, it will be hard to justify if they finish strong. On the other hand, I don’t know if he is more appealing to Jerry than to anybody else.

Yeah, but in theory, there is nothing stopping McCarthy if he decides to take another job.
This is absolutely true. I don't see that happening with McCarthy but that some of the risk of letting a coaches contract expire. They can go to someone else if someone else wants them.

It would be so funny if Jerry's old "comfortable with ambiguity" line came back to bite him in the ass, though.

Imagine if Jerry wanted Mike back and MM turned him down for another job. No matter how much Jerry tried to act like it was his decision, the truth would leak out and it would be embarrassing for him.

I'd be shocked if McCarthy left if Jerry offered him an extension or some sort.
I agree, as long as Jerry wants him back and is offering him anything even respectable as a contract McCarthy would be back. I think it's a form of battered wife syndrome.

He already has his system in place here, knows the scouting department/FO, and won 12 games three years in a row.

I think that would far outweigh them being cheap in FA when there's no other roster out there that he could take over that's better than what he already has.

I mean he is kind of used to coaching for teams that are cheap in free agency. When he coached the Packers they were extremely cheap in free agency most years if I remember correctly. At this point in McCarthy's career this is probably about all he knows. Hell, he even mentioned he has more say here than he had with the Packers. I don't think McCarthy really knows what it could be like to coach for a team that is aggressive about building the roster.

I think that's a huge reason Goof Son took such a liking to him in the first place. He knew Mike would be perfect for his "draft and develop", no-use-for-free agency plan.

For a guy with a pretty good record of winning and a Superbowl to his name he doesn't seem to have the backbone to demand anything.
