It doesn’t limit possessions. What it does is allow with almost certainty that the opponent gets sufficient room to extend their possession and with a large amount of certainty they will score. if a team has suppressed its opponent most of the game then why would you allow them a larger opportunity to score? It’s a crazy way to potentially loose a game if you give your opponent enough leeway to keep possession and close the margin of your lead. There is an abundance of these games played and televised every season.It’s done to limit possessions and eat clock. When you’re up by 3 TDs with less than 10 minutes to go, you actually want to give up easy completions and keep things in front of you.
.if a team keeps an opponent contained they will loose control and possession and the clock is diminished more by keeping their offense off the field. They can’t score if they don’t have possession.
