It’s done to limit possessions and eat clock. When you’re up by 3 TDs with less than 10 minutes to go, you actually want to give up easy completions and keep things in front of you.
It doesn’t limit possessions. What it does is allow with almost certainty that the opponent gets sufficient room to extend their possession and with a large amount of certainty they will score. if a team has suppressed its opponent most of the game then why would you allow them a larger opportunity to score? It’s a crazy way to potentially loose a game if you give your opponent enough leeway to keep possession and close the margin of your lead. There is an abundance of these games played and televised every season.

.if a team keeps an opponent contained they will loose control and possession and the clock is diminished more by keeping their offense off the field. They can’t score if they don’t have possession.

If you allow a team to extend one possession, and they need at least 3 or 4 to come back, then you’re proving my point. The longer one drive takes, the more clock is eaten, regardless of whether they score or not. When teams are up by that much, they’re fine with the other team scoring because killing the clock is the goal.

Perhaps you have seen teams that moved the ball 60 to 75 yards and scored and only used maybe a minute to do so when given sufficient room to advance the ball. That isn’t uncommon at all with most professional teams. This is pretty common these days. In the meanwhile the team that has the lead are swarmed and go 3 and out with less than a minute used off the clock with the aid of time outs and other means of stopping the clock or feigning injuries. The lead can got get squeezed pretty quickly . If you keep your foot on the opponents neck he can’t manufacture a scoring drive.

I hear you, but that’s the logic behind utilizing that defense. And, if one’s offense can gain one first down after forcing the other team to burn a lot of clock and their time outs, then the game is all but over. Like I said, it’s about forcing the other team to burn the clock and limit possessions. It fails miserably if you’re clinging to a 10 point lead. But up 21? You absolutely do it.

But why run the risk especially if your defense has suppressed them? Just continue to suppress them and keep them underfoot. It’s a safer approach than the prevent approach.

I suppose mister Bozeman is floating around on a mental flying carpet. I know why , however I just saw the reason.

Booze is going to be crushed when Georgia overcomes this 17-0 deficit and wins easily.

Tech has gone to the prevent defense and Georgia is taking chunks of yardage..Tech is trying to give away the victory.

Sorry Booze. The rambling wreck is about to became a reality. Q I’ll bet that Georgia won’t use the Prevent system because the know that Tech will maintain possession if they do. I look for Ga. To press hard at the line and devour the QB.
