24. VILIAMI FEHOKO | San Jose State 6036 | 276 lbs. | 5SR East Palo Alto, Calif. (Saint Francis) 12/16/1999 (age 23.36) #42 BACKGROUND: Viliami (Vill-ee-ah-me) “Junior” Fehoko (Feh-ho-coe) grew up in Stanford, Calif., in a Tongan family. He picked up football at age 8 at the Pop Warner level and continued playing throughout middle school. Though football was his first love, he also played rugby growing up and was a member of the East Palo Alto Razorbacks. Fehoko attended Saint Francis High School, a private school in Mountain View, Calif., where he was a three-year letterman and played both ways on offense (running back, tight end) and defense (defensive end, linebacker). He had his best season as a senior and led Saint Francis to an 11-4 record and the 2017 state championship. Fehoko posted 14.0 tackles for loss, 7.0 sacks and two forced fumbles, earning first team All-League and All-Bay Area honors. A three-star recruit, Fehoko was the No. 68 tight end in the 2018 recruiting class and the No. 176 recruit in California. A late bloomer, his recruitment picked up after his junior season, and he received a pair of Pac-12 offers from Arizona and California. However, Fehoko developed a connection with San Jose State head coach Brent Brennan (also a Saint Francis graduate) and signed with the Spartans, staying close to home (15-minute drive from his high school). Fehoko has a widespread list of extended family members who played college athletics or in the NFL, including his second cousin Vita Vea, who was drafted in the first round (No. 12 overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Fehoko accepted his invitation to the 2023 East-West Shrine Bowl.

STRENGTHS: Technically-focused edge defender with a diverse set of hand tactics … punches, stabs and swipes are well-timed and efficient … hands and feet stay in sync to sidestep blocks laterally and shave the corner … plays with square, low pads to leverage his attack … cleverly mixes up his pacing and uses both force and subtlety to keep blockers off balance … always ball peeking with the vision to see through and around blocks … relentless pursuit motor and makes plenty of effort plays on film … physically and mentally tough and doesn’t appear to wear down … outstanding backfield production, reaching 12.5 tackles for loss in each of the last three seasons (47.0 tackles for loss in 48 career games).

CONTENTS [179]
WEAKNESSES: Quick but not explosive … inconsistent bend turning the corner gives blockers a target … can be run upfield past the quarterback … arm length is average, and long offensive tackles will reach him before he can make first contact … stays glued to blocks when blockers engulf him … struggles to handle extra attention and can be pushed around by doubles … requires a moment to reignite his momentum after he sheds contact … misses more tackles than he should because of the tightness in his body … will turn 24 as an NFL rookie … heavily penalized player over his career (five offsides and four roughing the passer penalties over the last two seasons).

SUMMARY: A four-year starter at San Jose State, Fehoko lined up as a defensive end in defensive coordinator Derrick Odum’s 3-4 base scheme. The Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year in 2022, he led the Spartans in tackles for loss each of the last three seasons, including a career-high 19.0 as a senior. He finished his career No. 2 in school history in tackles for loss (47.0) and No. 5 in sacks (23.0). With the hands to free himself as a pass rusher, Fehoko counters without thinking and always seems to have a backup plan for his backup plan. Though he diagnoses quickly and is urgent in his reaction to movement, his body tightness will leave him lingering on blocks. Overall, Fehoko is missing the top-tier athleticism and length most desire on the edge, but he will appeal to defensive coordinators because of his energetic play style and refined handwork. He projects as a backup and rotational base end in the NFL.

Apparently he’s Vita Vea’s cousin, for what that’s worth. Likely fell because he’s a tweener

We are getting fixated on our RB need, at least I am.

Fehoko could be our next Armstrong, but his arm length of 33” is suspect for him to be a pure edge guy.

Quinn is getting too many ♟️’s
