To the first point, that's like equating us taking Joey Porter Jr. if he were to fall and disparaging the choice by saying "well they thought Kelvin Joseph was what they wanted at CB too".

At least that comparison would be tied to a recent pick and the current coaching staff, and not one from 10 years ago and a different staff, but it's a ridiculous comparison either way.

That's fair enough. Just think it's a dumb point to make that Mayer is by far better because a good number of teams have him as their top TE. But I disagree with Broaddus about much of what he has to say. What I'm saying is it's a dumb concept to assume that because some teams rank a guy in a certain spot that it's accurate. I was trying to point out that most teams have sucked at ranking TEs. So telling me that player A is significantly better than player B because that's how teams have them ranked is flawed logic to me. Escobar was just an example of how teams suck at judging these guys.

Plenty of examples since the 2013 draft when Kelce went after a multitude of worse TEs including Escobar.

The league is indeed bad at evaluating TE's seemingly although I think a lot of that is for reasons that don't really apply to Mayer.

Yeah and I don't dislike Mayer. I just probably wouldn't take any of the TEs in the first round. And I don't necessarily think the gap is huge between some of these guys. But it's also a great TE class. I just don't think I would view any of them as a first round talent. But I'd also probably view like 5 of them as second round talents which is a lot. Maybe 6 although I'm much lower on Musgrave then most. I don't think I would take him until the third but I'm sure most view him as a second rounder.

If we draft Mayer in the first I'll be ok with it. Not a guy to throw a fit over by a long stretch. Just other guys I'd prefer. I think if Wright is there for us in the first he is becoming my home run pick. But odds are he is gone.

I'd take Wright also and I think the team would as well, but I think there's a better chance that he goes top 15 than him dropping to 26.

Johnston may need to be on some of our radar as well. Stephen mentioned him by name which makes me think he is in consideration for Dallas at 26.

Wouldn't love that, although in the interview they were talking about most of the WRs being smaller types and Stephen mentioned Johnston as the outlier. They supposedly loved London last year though so I wouldn't be shocked.

Yeah it was more just the way he was talking about WR when he mentioned him. Specifically as a McCarthy type and being, big, long, strong and physical.

I'd be fine with a TE, not a first choice by any means but if it's Mayer in particular it's almost a guarantee that we're getting a guy who is going to make 2-3 Pro Bowls.

The Dallas Cowboys have been calling around and doing a lot of last-minute work on the receivers. They are not just calling college coaches of receivers they have an interest in, but people outside the organization they consult with on college prospects.

Athletically he seems to be a notch above Witten. Maybe it was the way he was used in the Irish offense. I have to defer to @Tony D on this one.

I have ran through a lot of scenarios and trading down makes so much sense. Thing is who is there at 26 that someone would covet. A Hooker mark might be nice but I think he might go sooner, believe it or not.

I think we all elevate Witten. He was never considered a first rounder and got killed by the scouting community. Meyer is more clean.

Witten never produced like Mayer in college. His best year was a tick below 500 yards. Mayer had over 800 yards both the past 2 years. Throw in 16 TDs and the production is impressive. Especially for a TE who wasn't playing glorified WR like Kincaid.

I think Mayer's production in college is a big plus for him. I think he set the receiving TD record mark for Notre Dame.

He is more clean. But athletically he is very average. I'd even say plodding. He isn't fast in a short area or long area. But he catches the ball.

Yea Hooker would be the most likely, maybe one of the CB's or Branch.
