I mean, if you want to let your HC succeed, you don't force anything on him. Let him hire his guys ad if he sinks, he sinks. What you can't do is force Moore on him and then almost immediately handicap him by trading away his best offensive player for peanuts.
Exactly. He’s got enough bullshit to deal with as an NFL HC, and yet the owner feels the need to undermine and handicap so he doesn’t get too much credit.

Fucked up!

Am I the only one who thinks it's weird that McCarthy had the team win 10+ games in back to back years for the first time in forever, was the first coach to get them to the playoffs in back to back years in forever, won the first road playoff game in forever, did better than anyone expected after that first game when Dak was out for five games... and it's like everyone wants to hold a gun to his head ready (and in many cases eager) to pull the trigger at the first misstep?

I really don't understand it.
I mean it does seem a bit unfair that people talk like he should be fired next year if we don't go to the NFC Championship game. That seems like a pretty unfair high standard compared to all other NFL coaches. But I also get why that should be the expectation.

But if the Packers get rid of Rodgers and the Niners take a step back with Lance/Purdy, it's not unrealistic.

Why should it be? This team hasn't made a championship game in almost 30 years. Why should it be expected to go now? Because we're wasting a generational QB? Because our roster is undoubtedly top-two in the NFC?

I don't want to come off as some huge McCarthy fanboy, because I'm not. I had no strong feelings one way or another when he was hired. But I think he's done a very good job here, especially the last two years. So I don't see why he should be on the hot seat. To me it's the opposite. If anything he's earned the benefit of the doubt.

Because fans are worn out from waiting for “next year”. I get it. Fans can only take so much before they just stop caring and just want to get over that hump.

No, not saying that at all. Just saying I can understand the fans’ frustration.

Because that's the natural progression from what this team has done the last 3 years. We have gotten better each year. I expect that to continue. But it is also unfair probably to say if the team doesn't make that progress that he should be fired. McCarthy hasn't earned to be on that type of thin ice. And I have no idea what the talent will be like next year on the team.

I actually think our roster will very likely be top 2 in the conference pending what happens in free agency with Philly and the 49ers. I expect a mass exodus from San Francisco to Houston on the defensive side, while the Eagles are probably going to lose a significant number of starters on both sides of the ball, probably in the 5-7 range with many key contributors like Kelce, Graham, Hargrave, Bradberry and so forth leaving or retiring.

I’m with you. These last two seasons have shown me that McCarthy can lead this team to success in a number of ways. Whether it’s road playoff wins, 25 wins in two seasons or repeat playoff births. There’s a lot to be said for the arrow pointing up. And now, he takes the reigns for what should be the final mile of the journey to his goal. We all feel that the next step is our measure of progress in post season, especially in a year where NFC was deemed a soft conference. We came close, but most of us seem to think we were as good as or better than the 9ers and Eagles.

From Albert Breer:

Here’s an under-the-radar thing to give Mike McCarthy credit for—the role he created for Ben McAdoo, and then Brian Schottenheimer, is outstanding. More or less, the idea he had those guys, McAdoo in 2021 and Schottenheimer last year, carrying a job description that had the veteran assistants studying league trends, troubleshooting game plans and sitting in on defensive meetings to give the coaches a set of eyes from the offensive side of the ball to consider.

I’ve talked to Cowboys DC Dan Quinn a couple of times about the job McAdoo and Schottenheimer have done, and he was over the moon in breaking down the benefits having someone in that role has had for him and that defense.

I think McAdoo would tell you that the experience allowed him to become a better coordinator when he got the shot to call plays again with the Panthers last year, and I think it’ll help Schottenheimer, too, as he transitions back into a coordinator role in replacing Moore in Dallas. And my guess would be that McCarthy will want to find another experienced hand (someone such as Greg Roman, maybe?) to fill the spot in 2023.

And, yeah, I know McCarthy’s a punching bag right now, and I’m not exempting him from criticism. But I would say there’s been plenty of good (replacing his quarterback and left tackle seamlessly early this year and hiring and keeping Quinn would be two other things) he’s done in Dallas as he enters a critical year for a lot of people in that organization.

Adding Roman as some sort of run game coordinator would be a fucking dream.

All in all I'm fine with where McCarthy is taking the staff, it's not ideal exactly but I don't think it'll be a trainwreck either. With how good our defense should be, we only need marginal improvements on the offensive side as opposed to a complete overhaul.

I'm assuming McAdoo will be brought on as QB coach with a trumped up title.

Yeah, getting Roman would be huge but I doubt it.

A bunch of people thought Schottenheimer was being too conservative offensively with the run game and holding Wilson back. They wanted a more wide open offense that would let Wilson throw it around more.

Their offense took a big step back in 2021 after Schottenheimer was let go, and we all saw what happened last year.

Wilson threw 100+ TD's and just 25 INT's over Schottenheimer's 3 years, it'll probably go down as the most productive 3 year stretch of his career.

so notice here that they discuss the fact that when Fat Wade was hired, Norv Turner was also under consideration for the head coach job. But when Norv told Jerry that Garrett was not ready to be an OC/playcaller, Wade Phillips got the job, because Wade was fine with letting Jerry choose his OC.
