The sad thing is that sometimes the solution is to trade those valuable players away for draft picks that have cheap contracts. If you don't want to spend money than stack your roster with as many players as possible still on rookie deals. Instead we never do that. We cling to those players for everything they are worth until they leave and we get nothing or almost nothing in return.
I can’t help but agree ….the player turnover rate is surprisingly low for a team who hasn’t done it right for close to 30 years ..which means they are holding on way to long .

Our issue is organizational ineptitude. We draft well in general but squander the lifecycle of player’s contracts. We can’t trade because we lack the relationships and ability to negotiate. Nobody can ever justify dropping a first on Amari and then turn around and sell a quality player like a cheap whore. And that is the most recent example they have where they actually got something tangible in trade.

You don’t value the comp picks?

We don't even manage to get that good of comp picks. They are always fifth, sixth and seventh round picks. We had a fourth once that I can remember.

Don't get me wrong, I love having extra draft picks. But maybe try to maximize the amount of picks instead of getting the bare minimum. If you have too many star players to fit them all under the cap (I don't agree this is the case) then trade away a fucking star player for some high draft picks. Use those to go get cheap star players. This isn't rocket science. You've already basically said this team isn't competing for a Superbowl over the next two years. Why not speed the process up?

Is it just me or does anyone else think we end up third in the NFC east, since we're all in?

I think Washington would have to hit a HR at QB for us to finish 3rd. I'm not actually convinced that Philly has passed us to be honest, although their DC frightens and confuses me.

I actually like targeting comp picks as a general strategy.

But there should be a happy medium lest we lose sight of the whole purpose of trying to accumulate comp picks, which is more chances at upgrading the roster.

Sometimes spending in free agency can upgrade your roster more than 3 comp picks would.

Wasting significant cap dollars on mediocre free agents is not a good way to upgrade the roster, but never spending in free agency isn't a good way to upgrade the roster either.

The upgrade in Fangio is counteracted by Moore becoming their OC.

We're in a strange spot because I think on paper we're still probably the best team in the division but it's kind of a house of cards because we have little to no OL depth and the DL is in shambles. We're also completely reliant on Diggs coming back near 100% and not being a Gallup or Steele.

If any of those things go sideways I could see us finishing 3rd if either the Giants or Skins get a little luck with the upgrades they've made, particularly the Giants.

The difference is at least Philly is trying. Presumably Jeffrey Laurie is not calculating roster decisions through the lens of of how they may affect his ancillary businesses. The purpose of an NFL franchise is to win games, not serve as a cash cow feeding investment decisions in unrelated businesses that deliver higher returns.

All true.

Ugh... I actually used to listen to Fisher in the 90s on KLIF after Norm's show... he always trashed Jimmy and defended Jerry.

He used that stupid bell on his show, too. Guess some things never change.
