Smith won't bust at LG unless he's retarded, and after listening to his interviews I think he's pretty bright, so I'm not worried about that. If he pans out as an LT it's a bonus.

Also not worried about Williams busting, the incident seemed isolated and he's played two full seasons since then without a peep, pretty much a non-issue to me.
You got to admit between the two of them it did kind of set a “boom or bust” vibe and both being drafted 10-25 spots earlier than most publications had them did not help.

That said, I understand why Dallas drafted them. I do.

My feelings are mixed.

I like Tyler Smith’s potential a lot, and he can compete at LG right away. To reach his full potential he’ll have to take to coaching, and it makes you wonder why Tulsa’s coaches didn’t make progress with him.

Sam Williams’ complete lack of showing for playing the run must mean he is a fucking hit man of a pass rusher to have been drafted in the second round. That is a major gap at the pro level. Compare with Lawrence in 2014’s second round and it’s a big difference.

But then even as a pass rusher, it’s raw strength, drive, and tenacity that has made him successful vs actual pass rush moves. Will that be enough vs 325 pound NFL left tackles when they get their hands on him?

Still feeling boom/bust-ish

His effort wasn't bad against the run. They used him kind of funky though. Watch the clips of the guy and you will see he is lined up almost a shade inside of the OT. I think he was sort of used wrong against the run. This isn't a Barno type effort against the run.

Clark, easy. Ridgeway could be a souped up Golden Cock.
Yeah those are basically my two guys. Clark is a homerun if he comes back healthy. His film for this past season is awesome to watch. Plug and play starter if he was healthy.

Ridgeway doesn't have the upside but he could be fun to watch. He will never fill up a stat sheet but I think he has the ability to be a really good run stuffing DT.

I'm pretty optimistic on Bland too. But you're talking thr next Brown maybe.

I'd rate Dallas a B-minus for this year's draft.
My favorite pick Damone Clark, who won’t even play this year. Projected as a top-40 pick before surgery for a herniated disk, the Cowboys got the LSU LB in the fifth. For once in this draft, the Cowboys didn’t reach.

The media missed badly on the QB value in this draft. This was one year most never panicked and exhausted a first on a QB that you had to figure would struggle.

If you're going to assume risk in a transaction, you can't extend yourself to do so. More so than anything, that was my issue with this class. I love Smith's ability, but he's a penalty machine who has a lot to work on. I had one of the highest grades on Williams in the industry... and Dallas reached over it on a Greg Hardy-like upside gamble. Clark's career will be delayed -- and it might even be in jeopardy -- due to a spine injury.

That seems a bit harsh. Hardy was unhinged in what he did. I don't think Williams situation is at all the same.

If not for a false sexual assault accusation (or I assume so since it was dropped) I wonder where Sam Williams would have been ranked. Like how is he lower than Boye Mafe for example? It's all people freaked out by the word sexual assault.

The guy is the Ole Miss all time sack leader. Second team All American, first team SEC. 12.5 sacks last season and a sub 4.5 forty. From all I can tell this is an isolated incident. So I guess we will see but I don't think he is a wanna be gangster like Bossman or a drug addict like Gregory.

The line where sports journalists over-emphasize their journalist side over sports knowledge is where we die-hard football fans basically toss out their feedback as being helpful.

They are reporting for the masses, and in a draft class of hundreds can't afford to dig too deeply and analyze like the teams doing the drafting have had to do. From most mainstream publications they are there to absolutely be journalists first, and so sexual assault allegations, true or not, must be reported and over-emphasized.

Some NFL person made the Hardy comparison, and it's being parroted for no good reason.

They don’t publish lists of the scouts often, but seeing here, they have turned some jobs in the department the last few years.
Wasn't Maxie a coach several years ago?

I know it feels like another second round character risk but not all character risks are the same. Parsons was supposedly a character risk too because he hazed other players or something. Now I'd say he is an extremely high character guy. I get a similar vibe from Williams but I don't have the access the Cowboys and other teams have with regards to that. I can just judge his career on the field and it's awesome.
