This is definitely one of those “lose a piece of yourself,” deaths. Troy Aikman said in the documentary “All Madden,” that just aired over the weekend that John Madden and Pat Summerall narrated his career.

By the same token they narrated part of my childhood. I grew up listening to those guys call every big game for Dallas. I was like 10 years old.
Well said.

I honestly can't recall who NBC's top team was back in the 1990s. Madden and Summerall dwarfed them all.

Hated to hear that he passed, but honestly thought he already had.

Football hasn't been the same since he retired.

I remember the game before it went console. Had it on the Commodore 64.
Really? Madden was on there? I had one and didn't even know that.

Also, assuming that's not a parody account... Dr Andrew McGregor can kindly go fuck himself sideways.

Legend isn’t descriptive enough a word.

What a great, great man.

More responsible for making the NFL great than any other individual

So many great games, a few stand out to me

1992 NFC Championship

1993 last game in regulation vs NY

2008 Superbowl, his last broadcast (rebroadcast tonight 8:00 EST on NFLN)

And of course, his HOF acceptance speech where he described how the busts in Canton talk to each other at night.

I didn't know that either. I used to play the shit out of Micro League Football on the C64. Would have loved Madden if I knew it was available.

Maybe it was in the later years?

I was reading an old article about Fox signing Madden and Summerall. Apparently they signed Madden at about 7 or 8 million a year, and Summerall at about 1.5.

That alone says a lot because Summerall himself was pretty well respected and Madden's contract dwarfed his.

I can 100% hear his voice when I read that.
I'll forever memorize that call in my mind:

Summerall:

"Aikman quickly...........The pass to Harpeerrrrrr!.....Harper off to the races, they're gonna run him down however.....at about...the niiiiine yardline Dana Hall.

Madden and Summerall simulateneously:

"That was a call!"
"That was a heck of a call!"

Madden:

"That was heck of a throw by Troy Aikman. Everyone had to do it. But someone had to call it but the other guys had to make it go.

~After Madden breaks down play~

Madden:

"There's Norv Turner he's the offensive coordinator. He's the guy who called the play. In fact, he's starting to feel so good he just hitched his pants like Nate Newton and stood up to watch this game!"

Summerall:

"I don't know if he feels that good quite yet."

Madden:

"I don't know, that was a big play though Pat"

IIRC, there was a Snickers wrapper on the turf and Madden spent a segment playing detective about who it belonged to…I believe he implicated the entire offensive line and then deduced it to Nate

Wasn't it Dick Enberg and the old Bungles TE? Blanking on his name right now.

Dammit, timestamped by milliseconds
