I don’t think we’re so desperate at CB that we must improve there.

Multiple front seven guys will make a bigger difference long term than CB now.

We do need a safety, though.
We have Diggs and Lewis. The rest of the corners on the roster probably don't make it past this season. We aren't good or ok at corner. We sucked last year and didn't get any better at corner. But that's ok because there are still really good free agent corners available if we strike out.

Mac Jones numbers are better. Joe Burrow's were better. I'm not really sure where you are going with this numbers thing.
Sorry, meant to say ACC numbers. Not gonna get into comparing across the ridiculously wide gamut of pass happy offenses and defensive talent discrepancies of NCAA football as a whole.

I actually like Howell a little. But your homerism for Trubisky makes me want to pick the guy apart.
You are unreasonably hard on Trubisky, but one has nothing to do with the other.

I actually think Howell is a solid prospect. Probably a little on the short side but 6'1" for a QB isn't a major disability or anything either. Sort of a slow delivery in my opinion. But most of the other stuff looks good to me. And unlike guys like Wilson and Lance this year I think by the time Howell enters the draft he will have a good body of work to judge him from.
Yeah I think Howell is, as we stand here today, a better prospect than Wilson and Lance who just went 2 and 3. Brees is short too and that didn't hurt his career.

Obviously he's not on Lawrence's level but that guy has been pegged as the 1OA since his freshman year, he's almost (but not quite) in that Luck tier I think.

But I think it is eminently possible that Howell is the first overall pick next year and it's certainly nearly guaranteed he's a first, a high first, barring something ridiculously unforeseen. I think if we could have snapped our fingers and made him eligible for this draft Howell would have gone second to the Jets.

I am betting it is Campbell or Melifonwu if our Pro Day attendance is any indicator.
Yeah Melifonwu just fits that Seahawks defensive coach protype too much and it worries me. Campbell is overrated in my opinion despite being better than Stokes. But I think he could be a solid starting corner.

I wouldn't put him up there with Lawrence or Fields in this draft. But I could see him in the class of a Lance, Wilson or Mac Jones. And yes I know that Fields was drafted lower than Wilson and Lance. But to me Fields was the second best QB in this draft. I'm sure the Bears will ruin him though. That place is a QB black hole.
Yeah, like they ruined Mitch Trubisky?

Please no Melifonwu. Want to stay away from that family. Samuel and one of Moerhig, Grant, or Holland.

We have decent players in Lewis, Brown, and Canady. Canady himself has been at least as good as Awuzie.
See, I disagree. I think those guys suck. Brown is a decent third corner, or was (he seems to be getting worse lately). Lewis is a penalty and mental error machine. Canady, I dunno. I don't want to see any of those guys starting.

I'm with you on the DT and the safety, but if the QB can just take two steps and toss it to the WR on the terrible corner, it's going to be a long day. Especially the way the league is going to more pitch and catch all the time.

I guess the real answer is this defense is so bad -- so bad -- that it's a multi-year project and you aren't going to get everything this year anyway. Unless you get really lucky on these next two or three picks.

I'm curious which corner we really like. I'd love Asante Samuel Jr. right here. I think he is by far the best corner left. Wouldn't shock me though if it was someone like Kelvin Joseph, Aaron Robinson, Campbell or Melifonwu.
I have a feeling Samuel is the guy Jerry loves. Memories of his dad giving them problems all those years, etc.

Of course I don't think Jerry is making all the picks anymore, either, so maybe that doesn't matter.

He won't be a first next year if he stays in school...

Better to be solid at CB and special up front than the reverse.

I’m much more worried about DT and safety, frankly.
Agree 100%.

I'd be fine with a Samuel or Campbell in the 2nd but I feel like going CB there would be a bit of a reach with better value available at safety (Grant/Holland or Moehrig as the unlikely dream), DT (Barmore or Onwuzurike) or even an edge rusher in Ojulari, Ossai or Basham.

There seems to be a pretty large group of CB's remaining: Samuel, Campbell, Melifonwu, Joseph, Robinson, and Adebo, and none of them truly stand out to me over the rest to where I'd want to spend 44 on one over potentially a 3rd on one of the others.

I'd feel perfectly comfortable going into next season with Diggs, Brown, Lewis, and a guy like Robinson or Adebo, plus the rest of the depth guys we currently have.

I don't think Samuel would be a reach. I'm shocked he didn't go in the first. But there rest I'm with you on. I also will be shocked if Samuel makes it to us.

I think we can still get a starting caliber corner at the top of the 3rd. I really hope the reports of us taking the safety position more seriously with the addition of Quinn are true and we finally pull the trigger on one. It has been far too long since we've had competent deep safety play, much less good. I have no doubt that a guy like Moehrig, Holland, or Grant would transform this defense.

If one of those three safeties drop close to us, I will not be against using a little capital and moving up to ensure we get one of them.
