I agree and not that preseason would have necessarily mattered to the coaches but it would have at least been great reps for a guy like that. Shit if preseason didn't exist who knows if Romo gets his shot the way he did. Sometimes you need to see a guy do it on the field in live action and preseason at least presents that opportunity. But I also hate the fourth quarter of some preseason games where the team literally plays all guys who have zero chance at the roster for some dumb fucking reason.
You must have preseason, but you really only need two games. NFL coaches learn the most about these guys in practice.
One game to both weed out fringe players while in fairness allowing them to showcase skills for the rest of the league. Then two weeks of normal practices before the final dress rehearsal preseason game with starters playing in the first half and close out with remaining fringe players the final two quarters.
That's enough. Four full games are not needed.
