I just don't know anything about Whitt or Simmons other than they coached with McCarthy.
Those two just seem like a comfort hire. Perhaps Im just basing it on this. I would prefer some kind of experience.

I'm ok without experience if it's a smart young coach like Kellen Moore was. But without knowing more both of these guys just look like McCarthy buddies.

I prefer experience but at the very least if it's a position coach he should have a successful unit on a good defense.

Well I think the offense is ready to go places. I would prefer quality experience for a defense this handicapped.

As bad of a HC as he was, Quinn was a great DC.

Richard is interviewing with Las Vegas. I wonder if Quinn would try bringing him back to Dallas with him.

That's true, but he had some great players and it was Bradley that built it. That said, although he's not my first choice I don't feel like he'd be a disaster.

If this is true it lends a lot of credence to the theory that McCarthy interviewed Simmons and Whitt as a favor to them to raise their profile, and Quinn was going to be the guy all along.

I'll say this for Quinn, at least he's had top 5 defenses when he had talent. I don't care much about his HC stint - his defenses weren't as good in Atlanta but they did lack talent there, and like Wade Phillips, some guys are just better coordinators than HCs.

And to be fair to Quinn Atlanta did make it to the super bowl so he wasn't a disaster there.

Lewis would have been my first choice and maybe even Gus Bradley after that and maybe some other guys, but Quinn is honestly a solid choice if he's the guy.

For the record Atlanta gave up 4.4 ypc against the run in 2020 which ranked 15th in the league.

They were tied for 18th in forcing turnovers with 21, tied for 14th in interceptions with 12. They were 30th in yards per play with 6.2.

It's really hard to predict how coordinators will turn out, like this Brandon Staley guy in LA, nobody would've been excited about him based on his track record but he's apparently a great defensive mind and likely to be a HC in a year or two, if not next month.

All we can do is hope for a position coach from an accomplished defense (Ravens, Bills, 49ers, Steelers, etc.) or a former HC with an accomplished background as a DC.

Obviously that's what Quinn is, he never got the defense stabilized on an offense-centric team in Atlanta, but you can't lay that all at his feet. First, he's not the coordinator, and secondly, he's not in charge of talent acquisition, and even with all that said their defense was trending upwards in 2016 with young guys like Grady Jarrett, Deion Jones, Devondre Campbell and Vic Beasley, they dominated the Patriots in the first half of that Super Bowl, and then the second half happened and the entire organization never seemed to recover.

I mean, from what I remember they thoroughly dominated Brady in the first half with relentless pressure, they scored a TD if I recall correctly, and then they went into safe-mode in the second half trying to run out the clock, which is fine up 28-3 with like 22 minutes left in the game. If not for a historic set of circumstances, some flukes, and some ridiculous play-calling on their last offensive drive it would've worked out perfectly fine and Quinn would almost certainly be the HC in Atlanta as we speak.

So yea, long story short, it's not some kickass yeehaw grand slam, but it's about as well as you could hope for.
