Just saw Tennessee got rolled by Kentucky

soon.. right @midswat ?
It’s a weird year. I mean, I wouldn’t get too cocky - A&M barely scrapped by Vanderbilt a few weeks ago.

And despite routinely signing top 10 classs, Jimbo in year four is still just a middle of the pack sec team, unable to compete with the elite. You’re paying the guy 7.5 mil a year to lose to Alabama by four touchdowns. That following you guys going 0 against Clemson, Alabama, LSU, Georgia, and Auburn last year.

Two things I’ve learned so far this year...

1. it’s just a weird year. Unless you’re Clemson, Alabama, and Georgia and maybe OSU, most games feel the NFL any given Sunday Saturday. Hell, FSU is a dumpster fire yet they just upset the #5 team the country.

2. Tennessee still remains handicapped by their QB position. Hard to win games when the QB turns it over three times a game. We led Georgia at the half, but second half Guarantano turns it over three times - all three times on the wrong side of the field. Against Kentucky he throws two pick sixes to start the game.

We signed a highly ranked kid who many thought could start as a true freshman - but he got no spring because of Covid and spent much of the fall in quarantine. We have another decent kid out of Texas no less, committed in the ‘21 class. Bottom line is, until one of those guys become QB1, we’re toiling in mediocracy

Now, deep down I know you dgaf about any of that and just want to troll with the “soon” line. That’s cool. I own that and it doesn’t phase me. I just typed all that because I love college football. I’m passionate about it now like I used to be the NFL - which outside of my fantasy team, I’m indifferent on.

Good news for you though: we play each other next month. Should be an easy “W” for you.

Texas is down. You’re in a recruiting hotbed. You have an administration that spares no expense when it comes to the program. Surely you guys will be competing for SEC championships and a spot in the college football playoffs.... soon. 😉

Kentucky ain’t that bad of a team anymore. They just won 10 games in the SEC a couple years ago. That’s something Tennessee hasn’t been able to do since 2007. And A&M hasn’t been able to do since 2012. Plus Kentucky finished with the same record as Tennessee and Texas A&M last year.... So :shrug

Impressive 2 point victory over Houston Baptist the other week, btw. :unsure

Every year I pick a hill to die on during the college football season.

This year I'm standing firm on the opinion that NFL teams are overvaluing Trevor Lawrence. I think he'll be a good NFL QB but I don't think he's a generational talent like Peyton Manning. I think it's more likely that he's Deshaun Watson Part II. Still a good QB but definitely not in Manning, Mahomes, Brady territory.

Since he's at Clemson surrounded by 4 and 5 star talent and playing in an ACC conference that's been bad the last few years, things have come entirely too easy for Lawrence. Because of this when you watch Clemson games he usually has the benefit of throwing from clean pockets to wide open receivers.

We've talked about this before. This is a big reason why most top NFL QBs come from programs that are a step or two below the elite teams. Over the past 20 years, QBs that had a drastic talent advantage and were All-American/Heisman material in CFB rarely perform at a high level in the NFL. Think QBs from Oklahoma, Bama, USC, Texas, Ohio State, Clemson, etc.

Meanwhile when you look at the top 15 QBs in the NFL almost all of them played at schools like Miss State, Purdue, NC State, Cal, Texas Tech, etc. where they weren't surrounded by a ton of 4 and 5 star talent.

I'd still take Lawrence with a top 5 NFL pick but I think people who have built him up as a can't miss All-Pro are going to be disappointed. I certainly wouldn't throw away an entire season to tank for him or give away multiple 1st round picks to move up for him. There's just too much evidence that points to him being a disappointment.

I sort of agree and disagree. I think he is worthy of being a number 1 pick like many QBs in the past. But that still doesn't guarantee Mahomes/Aaron Rodgers. Hell they weren't even guarantees when they were drafted.

But I think at worst he is a Josh Allen/Carson Wentz type. Big, athletic and a great arm. But maybe never a great pocket passer.

I'd love him but I wouldn't dump Dak and trade picks for him. I'm not confident enough that he will be head and shoulders better than Dak.

That's about how I seem him as well. I think he'll be a good pro who will be a dependable franchise QB but I'm not buying all the talk of him being on Mahomes, Manning, or Aaron Rodgers level.

The better question is what are your thoughts on Justin Fields. He is a very good college QB but I don't love him for tbe NFL.

He's in the same boat. I remember Dewayne Haskins setting all kinds of Ohio State records in this same system, while working with the same talent advantage.

If I were a betting man I'd bet that Trey Lance turns out to be the best QB from this class.

Yeah just not many tight window throws. Think Haskins but with mobility.

I’m so glad Kirby smart is a douchebag and ran off Justin Fields. He doesn’t get enough criticism for fkn that up.

What's the backstory on that one? Fromm was the established started and was playing well back in 2017-2018.

QBs are some hard to figure out. I saw that Mahomes was basically playing by himself in most games. If you watch the highlights of when TTU played LSU in the bowl game it was very noticeable that he had loads of talent. Still, I fully expected him to throw a ton of picks in the NFL because if his style.

On the other hand, I see a player like Lawrence and I do expect him to live up to his hype.

Mike Nolan coaches Tennessee’s defense.

For a split second I thought this would be a huge loss, then I caught myself and remembered this is Alabama. They'll just roll out the next 5 star WR with 4.3 speed and not miss a beat.

I don't know if anyone saw it, but the TTU punter yesterday booted one 87 yards. He was standing in his own endzone when he kicked it, and ended up with a touchback.
