Holy shit. This guy had almost 20 sacks not that long ago. But, he is a verified headcase. Not sure how I feel about this one.
None of the contract is guaranteed. Bring him to camp, see what he's got, both physically and mentally. If he's still waving red flags around, cut him loose.

If he shows he's put his life back together and still has some juice? Great. Cheap signing of a good player at a position of need.

If they treat this signing, and Gregory for that matter, as found money then it's fine. They basically have to ignore they're on the roster and then if they contribute, great.

But going into next season with Lawrence, Dorance Armstrong, Gregory and Aldon Smith as our edge rushers would be a ridiculously massive gamble and completely idiotic.
I'm with you on that. Treat him and Gregory both as bonuses if they pan out. Don't let it affect how you draft. Act like they aren't even on the team going into draft day.

I can't blame you or anyone else for feeling some manner of trepidation about it. I just hope that they don't plan strategy around this. Consider him a bonus, not an asset at this point.

I wonder what kind of shape he’s in, it’s been a long time since he’s even been in a training camp or game.
Here's a bit of news on that front:

I know it's a no-risk deal but I wouldn't waste a minute of my time on a guy with a rap sheet this long. We're not talking about someone who just smoked a little weed or who only got into 2 or 3 incidents. Look at the below laundry list of incidents. This guy is an idiot and he continued to be an idiot even while out of football. Notice the dates. Normally when someone is banished from a pro league it's a reality check and they usually straighten up and stay out of trouble in hopes of being reinstated. Not Smith though.

Here’s a rundown of the breathtaking amount of off-field issues Smith has encountered since entering the NFL:

But he is a changed man, you heartless bastard!

Well I'd bet that's what you are getting aside from Crawford, unless someone unexpected falls to us at 17, or unless we add someone late. But Joe Jackson and Jalen Jelks are gonna get looks too.

I think this ends the possibility of a guy like Griffen so I'd get used to it.

It's typical wildcatter Jerry but if either Gregory or Smith pans out, let alone both, we are gonna be in good shape. Then if we can land Kinlaw at 17, watch out.

Would be nice if we had been able to land Emmanuel Sanders with all that cap space, though.

He is 285 pounds???

I know it says he is shredded but that seems like he is 10-15 pounds to heavy.
I'm willing to be that it will come down a bit. 10 pounds shouldn't be too hard to drop, but the current circumstances present some challenges. It puts a returning player and a team with new coaching especially behind.

Nothing should stop us from drafting someone like Chaisson in the 1st or Weaver in the 2nd/3rd. We definitely aren't signing someone like Griffen, unfortunately, but this should have 0 impact on how we draft.

I think there is a swell of support on this board for Chaisson and there is concern we will overlook him now. That's all.

It happens every year. The board chooses a group pet cat that should be the pick, player is NOT picked, tantrums abound.

It's what we do.
Yep, and while I don't hate Chaisson I guess I haven't fallen in love yet.

Notice how many times we've changed the pet cats in just the last few weeks.

Thankfully professional teams take a much more structured, systematic approach
