100% on board with a shorter deal, if he turns out to be a top 5ish QB you're happy to pay whatever the going rate is 4 years from now, if he plateaus then you're glad you can get out of the deal earlier.

It's only these hillbilly fucks running this team who want to give him a 12 year deal so they can fuck around with the guaranteed money every offseason so they can sign 7 JAG's in free agency to 1 year/$1.5 million deals each.

We all knew 33 wasn't going to get it done, at this point the only question is whether it'll be more or less than 35. Either you pay him or you start putting out feelers to see what you could get in a trade.

I have my doubts about Miami really putting 5 and another of their 1's on the table for him but if true, I'd take it and run.

On the flip side, I understand giving him 34 or whatever when it's likely that in 3 years he's probably only about the 7th highest paid QB in the league.

Yeah if Miami did that I'd be all over it. But then you're probably using the top 5 pick and another to move up for Tua. Because no one in free agency is a long term solution.

Once again it is the Jones boys who blink. The only thing they've accomplished with this delay is costing themselves even more.

He will not sit out the season nor will he miss any offseason stuff.

He's just not cut from that type of cloth.

So instead of paying him something astronomical, just tag his ass and make him prove it again under a new coach.

Yes, he'll be upset about it and it might drive his price up next year, but if he plays even better and actually displays elite QB play on a consistent basis, then the Cowboys nor their fans will have any issue with paying him top 3 money.

For now, I need to see him prove it in order to get 35+ per year.

Creating animosity and bad feelings with the biggest leader on the team sounds like a terrible idea.

Franchise tag is what, 33 mil? I'm not rocking that boat over 2 mil.

It's a real shame that we didn't get to this point without Garrett in the picture. Things would be so much clearer if Dak had played at least a year with a decent coach. I guess that will happen if they end up franchising him.
Exactly.

And it's another example of how idiotic it was to hold on to Garrett for so long.

They clearly already had doubts about Garrett because they didn't extend him. But you didn't even have to dive that deep to see the seeds of doubt being planted.

Soon after the loss to the Rams in the playoffs, Stephen Jones talked about how in 2019, the Cowboys couldn't have another instance of making the playoffs followed by missing the playoffs. He specifically mentioned how they needed to figure out why it was that they couldn't seem to sustain success.

This clearly demonstrates that they had doubts as Garrett as a coach. And yet they decided to let Dak play under him and determine his long-term fate with the club with a coach that they already suspected was inferior.

How fricking stupid is that?

So now we see the Cowboys are clearly hesitant to pay him what he wants, and that's because like a lot of us, they still aren't 100% sold. If they knew so much of the franchise's future was riding on 2019, then why the hell did they hold on to Garrett?

Just one of the many gaffes by the Jones clan.

Yea, but that's for ONE year, not 35 mill for 4 or 5.

If he doesn't improve or imagine he actually takes a step back and you owe him 90 million more? That is going to damn near cripple their chances of getting to the SB in the near future.

Sure and given the numbers 35 mil will be less than the franchise tag for QBs next year. So you're not hurting anything in future years.

The only way you use the franchise tag is to buy more time to get a deal done or to trade him. Doing it as a one year deal in this situation will only hurt your team.

In all fairness the money doesn't appear to be the problem. The length of the deal is the problem according to all reports I'm seeing today. I guess in that situation I'd take the shorter term deal as opposed to paying more money at this point. 4 years is a lifetime in the NFL.

Ever heard of a "Golden Parachute"?
Yes I have and I hate them. That’s essentially the reason for my rants and I even refered to the guaranteed contracts as being essentially the same.

Sources: Cowboys have made only one recent offer to Dak Prescott

Posted by Mike Florio on March 9, 2020, 5:43 PM EDT

Multiple reports emerged on Monday that the Cowboys have submitted another offer to quarterback Dak Prescott, in addition to the recently reported offer that has an average value of $33 million per year. Multiple sources tell PFT that there has been only one offer.

The offer, per one source, was made on March 2. The Cowboys have not recently made any other offer. It’s unclear whether Prescott’s camp has responded to the offer.

The Cowboys would like to get a deal done before Thursday, the deadline for applying the franchise tag. If the Cowboys tag Prescott, a different dynamic becomes unlocked, and a new set of deadlines will become activated, from the launch of the offseason program in April to the various enhanced phases of it to the deadline for doing a longterm deal in July 15.

A deal worth $33 million per year at signing would be ricer than the Russell Wilson contract, which had a value of $31.4 million at signing. But no details have been reported regarding structure or length or, most importantly, amount of the guarantees at signing.
