Charley Casserly: Johnny Manziel won't go in 1st round

Everything is on the table with Johnny Manziel. That's part of his appeal.

Most analysts have Manziel going in the draft's top 10. There is increased speculation lately that the St. Louis Rams might take Manziel, who would displace quarterback Sam Bradford. And then there is our resident NFL Network general manager, Charley Casserly, who doesn't even have Manziel going in the first round of his latest mock draft.

You never know what's coming from play to play or from game to game. Manziel's unpredictability works on a macro level too. He could have a career like Michael Vick, Drew Brees or Vince Young, and none of it would be particularly surprising. We certainly don't know what's going to happen to Manziel this week.

I sit right behind Casserly when he's in Los Angeles and know how much research goes into his mock drafts. He spends all day on the phone with executives around the league; it's not coming out of thin air.

Casserly doesn't see Manziel as a top-10 talent and that view is shared by most teams, Casserly says. That is a long-held view for many of the decision-makers. Casserly spoke with eight executives back in January. Only one of the eight believed Manziel was a top-15 talent.

Of course, not everyone agrees. Our draft expert Daniel Jeremiah has Manziel going at No. 4 to Cleveland in his mock draft. ESPN suggested Monday they expect theBrowns to take Manziel at No. 4, if he's available. This is the time of year when practically every scenario is covered. You can find a mock draft or report covering nearly any possibility, and then you can find another report disputing the fact.Casserly's sources simply don't see the Cleveland Browns,Oakland Raiders, Jacksonville Jaguars or Minnesota Vikings taking Manziel in the first round. Speaking with Around The League on Monday, Casserly felt strongly that Cleveland's staff was not interested in Manziel.

Only three days left until we finally learn the truth.

I don't think I could pass on Manziel at 16.

And I might be wrong on him. I don't think he's an Andrew Luck can't-miss QB.

But he's got too much potential and Romo is too close to retirement for me to pass on him.

And no, I don't care if he sits on the bench for 2-3 years.

Get your crying towel ready Carp. Supposedly he is a goner to Cleveland or the Rams now.

Short of a career ending injury, Romo will be here for three more years.

Technically you could say he is already injured. It will be downhill from here.

I am pretty convinced we have a new starting QB in 2016.

And so I'm saying that I'm ok with taking a first round QB to sit for that length of time.
Don't think the Dallas organization will agree with you this draft. Until Romo actually has to sit there likely will not be a first round dance with a QB position. I can see a possible third round choice this draft but that's about it. That's my observation on how I think the organization will react.

Any other QB, sure. But this is Manziel. If he is within striking distance, which I severely doubt at this stage, Jones would do it.

I would endorse it mainly because it would cause panic in the streets...and I also don't happen to believe Romo will be playing all the way in three seasons.

I give him this year where he starts deteriorating and by 2016, he's done.

I am liking the chances of Bortles being there too...I'd take him unless someone offered a pile for 16.

Bortles? Feh. Not entertaining enough for The J.

I feel he is a franchise QB...cost is right for it. Jerry is smarter than me though, he'll work something better out.
Honestly, if we feel that he's the right QB, I could see it. And I like JFF. I just really don't like trading up in this years draft. Too many good players in the top 150. And I really don't like the thought of giving up next years first.

I get that, but our next QB needs to be taken ASAP. Eventually Jerry will tire of the losing associated with Romo...all the bad luck at public events that seem to follow him and whatnot.

I would hope our GM, fake or not, wouldn't be influenced by that idiocy.
