Yeah Guyton looks pretty raw to do that from day one. He was also a RT in college. Of course so was Tyron Smith if I remember correctly. But Tyler was raw too and came in as a rookie and was in my opinion the best rookie lineman in the NFL that year.

Mims played RT as well and honestly looks to be built like a RT. I also have questions about why he took so long to play.

If I had to guess Guyton makes more sense if you want a LT. But both guys are pretty strictly OTs. Not exactly the Cowboys style.
That's what makes the decision so fascinating.

The majority of the guys who look like they could be good enough at OT to keep Tyler at LG primarily only have experience at RT, guys like Fuaga, Mims, Latham and Guyton. Alt and Fashanu are really the only pure LT's in the first round because guys like Fautanu, Barton and Morgan all look like they project better to the interior, or at least in our case I think you'd rather move them inside with Tyler at LT than vice versa.

So you're either picking a higher ceiling OT who has never really played LT, or a guy who is probably better on the interior.

The added twist in all this is that Steele looked like a fuck all year and despite his extension he can easily be cut after 2024 without much of an impact on the cap. With that in mind, you might lean more towards the pure OT's who could potentially replace Steele long-term, while you still shift Tyler to LT. Or if Steele rebounds you can keep the rookie at LT long-term, Tyler at LG, Steele at RT and you have a heck of a young OL core.

But is it worth it to try to convert them to LT for potentially just a year or two if Steele continues to shit himself?

At this point I'd lean towards Fautanu or Barton if they are there, they're cleaner projections and arguably better prospects than guys like Mims and Guyton, but I wouldn't be upset about taking a bigger swing on a guy like Mims in particular.

I personally think Steele will be good again this year, but if he struggles, what about him at LG? He could still run block like a mofo but not have to worry about getting beat in space like he does sometimes at T.

Maybe but the same principle would apply in terms of the various considerations of drafting a guy like Mims who theoretically has the athleticism to play LT, but could be your long-term answer at RT if you decide to move on from Steele while moving Tyler back to LT.

At the end of the day I lean towards taking someone like Fautanu if available, but there's definite value in a guy like Mims, Guyton or Latham who could be your long-term LT or RT.

I can't imagine they are banking on drafting and starting a rookie LT. Now that would seem like a bad plan. If it happens like it did with Tyler, awesome, but that can't be your plan.
Never underestimate the Joneses ability to come up with a fucked up plan when an aged star leaves.

The plan for Dez Bryant was great at first. Then the rest of the plan failed so badly they had to trade a first to fix it and get Amari. Then they traded that guy for a fifth.

Yeah it was pretty awful. Pathetic washed up free agent and Gallup in the third round.

Courtesy of the great cowboyjoe... Jerry literally saying what we talked about earlier, that three cheaper FAs instead of one is "all-in."

What a fucking jackwad.
A bit after that he mentions (paraphrasing) "a year or two ago when we didn't sign a player and instead got three players... that's all in."

Has to be talking about when Gregory rejected them at the last second and they signed Boozestrong, Fowler, and whoever else.

So a player you really wanted who shuns you at the eleventh hour and you use that money on other players counts as "all-in." :lol

I had two favorites. The one was the pregnant pause we had when talking about how he has drafted QBs for the future. Like he was waiting for a protest but his eyebrow raise stopped that line of questioning. The other was the sign three for the price of one thing, which has been talked about here for every offseason since forever.

Could've been Von Miller too since there was some pretty heavy smoke after Gregory went to the Broncos.

The real issue is that guys like Reddick get signed for a deal similar to what we had in place with Gregory, or less, but the FO rarely considers them because they're unimaginative.

Three backups beats one great starter in Jerry's mind.
