It's an interesting move. I think it shows some creativity from the Cowboys front office. It's not the worst move they could make.

Is there anyone else they could have obtained for that fourth round draft choice? Maybe an upgrade at second team G or RB that could have been had for a 4th? That would be my question. I would think Lance would have little, if any, impact this year.
Judging from the past? A starting QB, 2 starting TEs, a backup OL, however you want to classify Pollard, a situational pass rusher, and a starting LB and 4 misses. That’s the last decade.

Because he would have less than 24 hours to learn the playbook. I wish there was enough time but that wouldn't really be fair to the kid. I definitely wish we had him at the beginning of camp as opposed to now.

I do wonder if the Cowboys try to work in the packages for him this year though. His mobility is legit. I could see some Jalen Hurts type mobility with him. Sadly his passing looks more like rookie Hurts than Hurts now. Just looks slow at processing which may never be able to be fixed. You see a lot of that Russel Wilson free Lance in him though.
I don't think there's a massive difference between Hurts and Lance in terms of their skillsets. Hurts played more in college and didn't have a year taken away by injury in the NFL, but if you could theoretically drop rookie Lance in Philadelphia for three years with no injuries and the roster they had last year, I don't think you'd see a significant difference between him and what Hurts did last year.

What won last year in Philly was their OL and the cutesy shit their staff drew up around how dominant their OL was. Lance can easily run 10-12 times a game behind the best OL in the league and throw some no-brainer screens and a couple slants/jump balls to Brown.

The analytics team would have offered a perspective on whether the trade was advisable. It's not difficult to see why they would have thought the trade was a good value.

It's nice that the team has some long-term vision, but I'd feel better had they used the 4th to sure up some more pressing needs.

Let’s just keep things simple kids.

In the last few days, Joshua Dobbs was acquired by the Cleveland Browns for a fifth round selection.

Perspective is a great equalizer.

The sensational storyline here is Dak and whether or not Lance can develop into his replacement, but the most likely scenario here (assuming Lance pans out to some extent) is that we extend Dak, Lance looks good in preseason next year and we flip him for a 2nd or 3rd.

Or we just hold onto him as depth in 2024 and let him walk in free agency for what would probably be a 3rd round comp pick.

The crux of the situation will happen behind closed doors, first in terms of what the negotiations are like with Dak on an extension, and secondly to what extent Lance is able to develop throughout this season and into next offseason.

Lance has a lot of natural talent but has shown to need major development.
This trade is basically buying a lottery ticket (unlikely to hit), but I love the fact that they are willing to take a chance like this, just for the fact that it's always wise to keep churning at QB... that is how we ended up getting Dak, after all.

I think it's presumptuous to think SF broke something as opposed to he just isn't capable.
This guy is a rare case because he was arguably the most inexperienced, raw QB to ever go in the top 5, maybe even the first round. Even Anthony Richardson had more college experience than him, and then he was out for the year after game 1 in his second season.

Almost every other QB coming out in the draft is further along the learning curve than he was, then he only got about 18 months in an NFL program before tearing his ACL.

We basically don't know what his potential is. He may never improve much from what he is right now, but there's a whole lot less certainty than if he was a guy like Zach Wilson who started three years in college and then started 20 games in the NFL.

I think that inexperience makes it less likely he pans out. I hope I'm wrong.

It's a good gamble, IMO.

If I had to bet I don't think he'll ever be much more than a good backup, but the risk proposition is worth it.

The long and short of it is, would you give up a 4th to gamble on what you could turn Anthony Richardson into for 2 years/$7 million?

I sure as shit would and that's where we're basically at with Lance. It probably won't work out but if it does you either have yourself a franchise QB or at least a guy you could flip for a 2nd.

Hell, if Lance looks really amazing in preseason next year or in a spot start or two maybe you even franchise him depending on what the Dak extension/cap situation is in 2025 and see if anybody is crazy enough to give up a 1.

While I appreciate the optimism in this thread, and I do give the front office credit for at least trying something at the QB position...

Let's face it. Shanahan can make any QB look good in his system. If he's already completely washing his hands of a guy who cost them huge draft capital, the guy can't play. At all.

We gave up more for Trey Lance than we got for Amari Cooper.

Happy weekend, everyone.
