Yeah, because once that ball hits the ground even if the kicking team is surrounding it, you just never know how it will bounce.

He's right.
If there are already guys surrounding you between the 5-10, then you have to catch it so as not to get downed inside.
If the guys are in front of you, then you let it go.

No, he's not. 95% of the time if the ball bounces at the 5 it goes into the endzone. You don't touch it.
