Von Miller, the NFL’s active leader in career sacks, has signed a deal to play for the Dallas Cowboys this season, the team announced Sunday night. The deal ensures Miller will return for a 15th season. Terms were not available.
The DeSoto, Texas, native celebrated the news on Instagram, posting a photo of himself in a Cowboys uniform with the caption “Hereee Weee Gooo”.
Miller, the Super Bowl 50 MVP and a surefire future Hall of Famer, arrives in Dallas after spending last season with the Washington Commanders. There, he made it known that he had no intention of retiring.
“I think I proved to myself that I can play another year,” said Miller, who turned 37 in March. “I want to be here (in Washington), but I’m not in a position to start making demands and saying where I want to play and where I want to be at. Whoever wants me, that’s where I’ll be.”
Miller joined the Commanders late in the 2025 offseason, believing he had a chance to make another deep playoff run with Jayden Daniels leading the team’s offense. But Washington struggled early and the mistakes were compounded by a slew of injuries, contributing to a 5-12 finish. Miller’s initial role as primarily a third-down rusher was expanded out of necessity; he started three of his 17 games and played 420 defensive snaps. He led the team with nine sacks, the most he’s had with a single team since 2018.
Drafted by the Denver Broncos with the second pick in 2011, Miller earned Defensive Rookie of the Year honors and his first of seven career All-Pro designations, then followed with a franchise-record 18.5 sacks in 2012. In 2015, he helped the Broncos to a Super Bowl 50 victory over the Carolina Panthers, notching 2.5 sacks to earn MVP honors.
The Broncos traded him at the 2021 deadline to the Los Angeles Rams, with whom he collected his second Super Bowl ring. He spent the next three seasons with the Buffalo Bills.
During his lone season in Washington, Miller cracked the league’s top 10 in career sacks (since 1982, when the stat became official). His 138.5 career sacks tie him with his former teammate and mentor DeMarcus Ware at No. 9.
What this means for Dallas
The Cowboys knew they needed to get more pass rush. Miller now joins a group that includes Rashan Gary, Donovan Ezeiruaku, Malachi Lawrence and James Houston. It might not be a great group, but it should be a very good one.
While Miller is 37, he showed last season that there is still tread left on his tires. His experience could be most valuable if Dallas reaches the playoffs. It’ll be interesting to see how the rotations work out in Christian Parker’s new defensive scheme. Gary and Ezeiruaku are the expected starters. Miller, who averaged 24.7 defensive snaps per game last season, adds valuable depth.
This move also probably means the Cowboys are done with any talks of trading for Maxx Crosby. However, I don’t think this move means Dallas is completely done trying to improve its defensive roster. Jerry Jones has said the franchise is willing to part with high-round draft picks if the right deal presents itself. — Jon Machota, Cowboys writer
