Video Game Chatter

Is there an old game that you guys still pull out and play every now and then. By "old" I mean something from the original XBox, PS1, or early Nintendo days.

I'll play Final Fantasy VII every now and then on my PS3.

We play N64 NFL Blitz, Ken Griffey Jr Baseball, and Wayne Gretzky 3D Hockey in the office pretty regularly. Blitz is still by far the most fun.

Blitz is a good one that I'd play if I still had it. When my kids had the Gamecube, Blitz was one of the games we used to play a lot.

I was a Sega Genesis World Series Baseball fan back in the day. Even though the Braves were my team I always played with the Mariners. They had a killer line up at the time.

I never did care for the Blitz games, but I couldn't get enough of NBA Jam and then NBA Showtime.

I have NBA Jam on my Kindle Fire. I will fire it up every few months or so.

I went ahead and pre-ordered Madden 25 the anniversary edition through Amazon for $99.

That's the one that comes with a full season of NFL Sunday ticket for the computer and mobile device. I think that's a great deal.

This will be the first time that I've had Sunday Ticket since around 2001. Since then I've either been overseas where the service isn't offered or I've lived in a Dallas Cowboys market.

Oh wow, that is a good deal.

You can just hook your laptop up to the TV via HDMI and it'll be just like you had it on DirecTv.

Looks like the NCAA isn't going to renew it's contract with EA Sports.

Looks like the NCAA isn't going to renew it's contract with EA Sports.

Really? That's good news, and here's why:

I want someone else to get a crack at making a major football title. I actually have enjoyed the NCAA series in recent years as opposed to the Madden games that haven't been so great. But even still, letting someone else, preferably 2K sports, get a shot at creating a football engine is great news.

I really hope we get a NCAA2K game next year.

I think this means no one will have a title, not just EA

Well, I would hope that it could open the door for 2K to make a college game, even if it doesn't have "NCAA" in it.

According to this article at Operation Sports, not much is going to change:

The NCAA has decided today, unilaterally it appears, to not renew their license with EA Sports for the NCAA Football video game beginning next year.

In the statement, the NCAA said, "The NCAA has made the decision not to enter a new contract for the license of its name and logo for the EA Sports NCAA Football video game. The current contract expires in June 2014, but our timing is based on the need to provide EA notice for future planning. As a result, the NCAA Football 2014 video game will be the last to include the NCAA’s name and logo. We are confident in our legal position regarding the use of our trademarks in video games. But given the current business climate and costs of litigation, we determined participating in this game is not in the best interests of the NCAA."

EA should still be able to work out individual school, conference, awards, etc. licenses from the CLC -- which should mean the series should be able to live on. At the end of the day, this is the NCAA taking it's name and logo off of the game, but nothing more it appears. So while the series can't be called "NCAA Football" anymore, perhaps with the ESPN license the series can be called "EA Sports College Gameday 15" next season.

The only way this ends the NCAA Football series altogether is if one of two further scenarios happen: 1)If EA Sports decides it is done with the series altogether, which is doubtful given it's a top seller in the US. 2)If the CLC won't play ball with EA Sports, and thus EA has to negotiate licenses individually from member institutions

It is possible EA Sports will not continue development of the game after this year because of either reason, or because of fears of financial fallout from the Ed O'Bannon lawsuit. However, if EA wants to they can continue the game with purely cosmetic changes and greater creative freedom without the NCAA's hovering above the game.

And let's face it, the less the NCAA is involved in anything, the better it will be.

So in a sense, the only thing different today versus yesterday with regards to the NCAA Football series is that it is no longer the NCAA Football series going forward. Everything thing else remains the same.

This has to be related to Ed O'Bannon's lawsuit

edit* - I guess I should have read the entire thing

Is this related to the Ed O'Bannon lawsuit?

Doesn't sound like it. Looks like whoever picks it up next year will still be using the players' likeness.

As an aside, I didn't know THQ went out of business. I stumbled across a promotional Youtube video of the new WWE game that's coming out this year and it's being made my 2K Sports.

I did a little research and found out that 2K purchased the gaming rights to the WWE game as during the THQ bankruptcy proceedings.

I was trolling dallen, but now it appears I trolled you as well.

Update: EA Sports vice president Andrew Wilson has released the following statement on EA's official site:

"By now, most fans will have heard that EA's licensing agreement with the NCAA is set to expire and that we have agreed to part ways. I'm sure gamers are wondering what this means.

This is simple: EA Sports will continue to develop and publish college football games, but we will no longer include the NCAA names and marks. Our relationship with the Collegiate Licensing Company is strong and we are already working on a new game for next generation consoles which will launch next year and feature the college teams, leagues and all the innovation fans expect from EA Sports.

We took big creative strides with this year's college game and you’ll see much more in the future. We love college football and look forward to making more games for our fans."

So it's the same shit released every year with minor 'improvements' but without the NCAA logo slapped all over it.

Is there even a college game on the market these days?

I don't recall seeing a new college game in quite a while.
