Completely different geographic location. Venezuela is right in our backyard and China, Russia, and Iran have all shown a lot of interest in the country. So, I don't think you can equate the two.

But no one said it was about “spreading democracy.” Surely you see how narrow your post is?

I could easily say, well; there are other countries around the world with just as much oil as Venezuela, how come we didn’t invade them?

Ipso facto we didn’t “invade Venezuela” for the oil.

I can think of several other factors. Enforcing the Monroe doctrine and keeping China and Russia out is a big one, and perfectly valid. Unfortunately, they are just as much about the oil as we are, and sadly, the geopolitical games have to take that into account.
