The bit about likely going on IR either way is interesting and probably means they don't think he'll miss much more than 4 weeks, but overall it's still idiotic when you think about it.

They've seemingly known about it for a while, so what if this happened in November or December and he missed the last 4-5 games of the season? Or a playoff game?

The surgery seems relatively minor, so why not just fix it up during camp and not worry about it being a ticking time bomb?
