The fights are cool so long as nobody does anything stupid.

Cowboys right guard Zack Martin suffers stinger, leaves practice

OXNARD, Calif. -- Dallas Cowboys right guard Zack Martin was unable to finish practice Tuesday because of a stinger suffered in 11-on-11 work against the St. Louis Rams.

"We've got to obviously do a lot of work and make sure there's nothing more there," Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said. "Hopefully that's all it will be. Obviously scary and something that we were concerned about but think we can keep our fingers crossed there and hopefully he'll be fine."

Martin was hurt while pulling on a Darren McFadden run when he struck a St. Louis defender and crumpled to the ground. He remained motionless and was quickly attended to by the Cowboys' medical staff.

Owner and general manager Jerry Jones, as well as Stephen Jones and senior director college/pro personnel Will McClay walked on to the field while Martin was being helped. Fellow offensive linemen Ronald Leary, Tyron Smith and Doug Free and quarterback Tony Romo also checked on Martin.

"Obviously scary for everybody when any player goes down like that, much less Zack," Stephen Jones said.

Martin, who was an All-Pro selection as a rookie, was replaced in the starting lineup by Mackenzy Bernadeau. With Smith (biceps) and Leary (back) not practicing and Doug Free limited with a foot injury, center Travis Frederick was the only starting offensive lineman to take every snap.
 
Notable Standouts

Tyler Patmon – Before he got involved in the fight that ended practice, Patmon had a strong day in the Dallas secondary. He fended off St. Louis in one-on-one drills. Moreso than that, he came up with a big win for the Cowboys defense when he intercepted Nick Foles in full-team drills against the St. Louis offense.

Terrance Williams – Williams clearly answered the call on Dez Bryant’s challenge to play with more intensity. As the Cowboys’ top wide out, he enjoyed a strong day of practice with several key catches. It began in one-on-ones, when he skied over Trumaine Johnson for a contested touchdown on a fade route. He also added a touchdown on a shallow post in full-team work. But the highlight of his day came in the team run period, when Tony Romo hit him on a play action pass for a long gain down the middle of the field.

Darren McFadden – Tuesday was McFadden’s first day mixing into 11-on-11 work, and he looked impressive doing it. The veteran looked decisive hitting holes for solid pickups, and he managed to make solid yardage even in a practice without live hitting. He also showcased his value as a receiver, as Romo found him several times. On a 3rd-and-Goal from the 12, Romo found him in the flat, and he took the ball down to the one-yard line.

What looked like #92 on the Rams (Doug Worthington) was most definitely the catalyst for the biggest and final brawl... he was the coward who took the cheap shot, hitting Terrence Williams from behind. ol Porn Stache said no one was a full... I wonder if he will change his stance after he sees that video?
 
Watching the coverage on ESPN on the fight this morning and they showed a cheap shot by one of the Rams players and what did the announcer say? "That Ram got in a good shot"....

A cheap shot is a good shot now?
 
I have to say I think we come out of this better. In the earlier fight the almost entire Rams defense runs off to a fight and Romo just keeps the offense practicing against the one guy that stayed behind. Then we've got our new DE channeling Haley and getting in their OL's heads to the point where it starts another fight. And in the video I've seen I mostly see our players trying to calm things down and look out for each other while the Rams run around taking cheap shots.

Zack Martin is expected to miss no more than a week of practice with an injury he suffered when the Cowboys worked against the St. Louis Rams, a source said.

The Pro Bowl guard injured his neck while pulling to block on a Darren McFadden run during a team drill against the Rams Tuesday afternoon. He stayed on the ground for several minutes while team doctors and trainers held his head and put him through a series of test with his hands and arms.

Quarterback Tony Romo and the rest of the starting offensive linemen gathered around Martin while he was being checked. Owner Jerry Jones and his son Stephen, the team’s executive vice president, came down from the tower where they observe practice to check on last year’s first round pick.

“Obviously, it’s scary for everybody when a player goes down like that, much less Zack,’’ Stephen Jones said afterwards. “Hopefully he’s going to be fine.’’

He will.

A source said tests showed that Martin suffered a stinger. He was moving around well last night and this morning and should miss no more than a week of practice.

It’s unclear if that will give him enough time to be ready to play in the team’s third pre-season game against Minnesota on Aug. 29.
