The Work Thread..

People actually do this. Had a guy on LOA that expired three months ago just show up and tried to clock in and when that didn’t work, he got irate when he couldn‘t check out a lift or equipment. And yes, we got excellent site security and stuff.
I wonder if he showed up to do work or steal shit.

Do any of you guys work with Muslims?

We have several that work as DOD interpreters and such in our facility and they will pray at various times throughout the day in the middle of the breakroom floor.

We want to be respectful but at the same time we're trying to enjoy our lunch and watch a little TV during our break.

It's just a bit of weird vibe when you're yucking it up with ESPN blaring on the TV while someone's in the middle of the floor praying.

Thanks, man.
They are paying 45/hr for heavy equipment operators in my area. Fucking crazy. Or, you can get a job at Bucees managing their car wash facility for 125k a year with all benefits and aggressive 401k match.

I read a lot of signs in my travels. :unsure

We have a couple here on the vessel. They do not do that here. They are encouraged to pray and all that, but it isn't allowed to be done out in front of everyone. They have a couple other places here that they can do it privately though.

Only once did I work with with a devout Muslim.

He would always leave his desk to pray but I have no idea where he went to go and do it at as I never ever saw him in said prayer.

But yeah, having that occur around you in the break room would be awkward.

I had a pretty large group of Afghanis five-six years ago. They weren’t pushy, just wanted a spot for their rugs. Now the Iraqis? Very pushy.

I was on Saratoga back in 1990 when we were heading over from Mayport FL to the Red Sea just after Iraq invaded Kuwait. I was working in the ship's brig and we had one guy, I think he was an electrician, that the CO put him on pre-trial confinement because he had become such a problem child as a newly-declared Muslim. The brig officer was the crusty-era Vietnam veteran who we all got a kick out of, and one day this detainee asks him during a visit if he could tell him which direction the ship was heading because come prayer time he needed to face east. The brig officer, without skipping a beat, told him "Ah, just face the fo'c'sle, I'm sure Allah will understand". That shit would cause a shitstorm today.

When we had them working in our facility we provided a place for them to pray at their prescribed times. They had to do it as their break though. Religious freedom doesn’t entitle you to extra breaks

That's the thing that gets me. There are other areas of the building that offer more privacy but for whatever reason they choose to pray in the break area.
