The Great Amigo Thread...

A story about flying birds changed his life? GTFO.

And isn't that story from The Mighty Ducks movie?

I bet when Lavell Edwards told him (he was the waterboy though, not a player), there was music just like Emilio had.

I can't believe the guy still insists on telling stories about a football career he knows he never had.

There is zero proof available that shows he was on any team in any capacity, and he conveniently has a defense as to why he can't provide said proof himself.

If you don't believe him, then that's just too bad. He's just not important enough to have to prove it to you.

I might buy the injuries excuse if it took 11 or 12 wins by necessity to win this division. The winner of this division however will have like 8 wins. Injuries or not we should be getting to 8 wins. To not do so is incompetence of the highest level. Injuries my ass.

And fuck this notion of making a difference like it's the fucking United way. That's some of the most straight up retarded bullshit I've ever heard.

Did you know that there was a Mike Burke on a BYU football team?

From 2002-2005.

But he played volleyball.

Dude, he got hurt and was never able to make "officially" make the team. That's why it does not show up on any type of documentation, anywhere.

You never heard the story about how the Cougars Team Doctor just told him his knee was gone and he just cried?

You are a monster.

I couldn't remember why he never made the team, but all of those coaches he mentioned learning so much from were QB/TE coaches and the OC. Well, didn't he play FB? How was he getting all of this life-changing football knowledge from a different position coach?

See, that's why he's so full of shit. People that are compulsive liars often do themselves in because one lie contradicts another.

This is what has definitely happened to Hostile.

As you pointed out, he's told countless stories of all of these great coaches he's learned from and all of these amazing things he's experienced through football, but how could he have done all that if his "career" was so short lived?

If all he did wa spend one single training camp or preseason with a team, then how on earth could he have met so many people and benefited so often from these supposed experiences?

Obviously, he could not and he did not.

Check the roster history at BYU. See what turns up. I don't care enough myself.

I agree with everything you wrote here. The one thing that bothers me about Garrett that is not Landry like is his constant dropping of F-Bombs and such. It bothers me for a couple of reasons. 1. Though it is definitely a sports thing (a societal thing for that matter), one of the things that made me admire Landry so much is that he wasn't that. He was different. 2. And strangely, this may be more powerful than #1 - I don't even think it fits Garrett. That is, I don't know why he does it? He proves with his communication every single day that he has no need to do it. He's not limited in vocabulary or brain power. I don't know that it endears him to players or means that he "speaks their language" either.

To me, what made Landry - Landry, was his quiet, upright demeanor and character. Players despised it on some level, some called it hypocrisy (Skip Clueless), but I always called it the coach of America's Team. Roger's character was right there as well. I always laugh when I hear Roger say that Landry wouldn't even say "hell."

If you don't mind me saying so, that is one of the coolest compare and contrasts I have seen done in a long time, and I agree.

What drew me to the Cowboys in the first place was the class of Landry and Staubach.

Him dropping the F-bomb on Hard Knocks is what made me want him as our head coach. Roger Staubach cussed too, just saying. It is language that is all, it is not a weakness.

That's one take. There's another..."Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouths....the good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks."

I take the second view.

In terms of Roger, he wasn't dropping F-Bombs, and what he said was mild. There was a reason they made fun of him - in a respectful way - and called him Captain America (including his lifestyle contrasted with Joe Namath).

I'm not bothered that that didn't appeal to you, or that the other end of the spectrum does, but it is undeniable that the Dallas Cowboys (for better or worse, whether an accurate perspective or not) were characterized as the guys known for wearing the white hats, and for class, almost exclusively because of Landry and Staubach (though they had a bunch of other classy players as well).

"There wasn’t a player on the Cowboys who didn’t look to him and think, ‘As long as we have Roger we have a chance to win,’” said one NFL coach. Staubach was also known for the way he conducted himself off the field. “His was the type of image you wanted in the game for young people,” Landry once said. Part of that is Staubach’s vibrant Catholic faith. Another aspect is his family life: He married a girl from his hometown and is the proud father of five.

Looking back on his outstanding career, Staubach admitted it was hard having to wait so long to get his NFL chance. "Patience isn't one of my overwhelming qualities," he said. "I was frustrated." When asked how he would like to be remembered, Staubach replied: "As a pretty darn consistent quarterback." Fans of the Dallas Cowboys and the NFL will remember Roger Staubach as much more than that, and rightly so."

I love when people turn things the way they want. Corrupt does not equal cussing. Geesh it is a book edited by men, written by men in a different time where lifestyles were different, words meant different things, and things were omitted to fill the needs of the rulers of the time. It is filled with adapted pagan rituals and stories. To take it literally is ridiculous when you have no idea what all was written, what the words meant at that time, and what has been removed or misinterpreted over time.

You want to use it as your moral compass fine, but it is YOUR compass, and that does not make it (or you) better than someone that does not believe as you do, so keep it about football.

I think you have given two very religious posts in a row (neither of which are true or do I agree with). I simply responded to your first one. My take on Landry and Garrett had nothing to do with religion. It had to do with what I prefer. Am I allowed? I think your hostility speaks volumes. So keep it about football. Ok?

blindzebra said:
There was no religion in my first post, you went there and phrased it in a very condescending holier-than-thou manner. What I wrote in my second post is 100% accurate.

rcaldw said:
What you wrote in your second post is garbage. You have no clue what you're talking about. (But let's not turn this into that - which I'm sure you want to. It's the bully way to get every reference to morality shut down in every possible forum. Here I am on record - for anyone paying attention - I don't want that debate here - it's fruitless. But I'm also not bound to concede that he's right, when he's not). They are talking points for the folks who believe what you do. In terms of the first post, you said "It is language that is all, it is not a weakness." That IS a religious perspective (the religion of secularism). The way you get away with it is by claiming that it isn't. But it is! I happen to not agree with it. As a result, I DO think that language matters. But as I said in my post, I don't CARE what you want to believe. Believe whatever you want. I think I said that pretty plainly in my earlier post. The only thing that made it condescending in your head is your own conscience. I admitted I am on one end of that belief spectrum - you are on the other. Is that a lie? How is that condescending? I simply acknowledge that we see it different. Have at it! It's your choice. But I have mine as well. I have stated what mine is. I stand by it.

blindzebra said:
LOL, you are delusional.

You constantly go there, we all see it and I am over it. Believe what you want, I don't care, but keep it to yourself. You have no idea what I believe and you know why? Because I do not throw it in anyone's' face every chance I get. People complain because you do it all the time.

What I wrote was fact.

Uh oh... The children are starting to go after each other, so dear leader steps in with another story to calm the masses.

In response to BZ saying he likes Garrett dropping F-bombs.

Hostile said:
That is your right. Who am I to tell you it is wrong? No one, that's who.

Let me simply put it to you this way. It is yet another thing that made Landry rare in a world where it is more and more acceptable. It's like tattoos nowadays. They have become cliche'. If you want to stand out now, don't have them.

Years ago my nephews played football for a HS team in St. Johns. The team started off really bad. One reason was that the kid who was expected to play QB didn't go out for football. So the coaches and team captains went to ask him to please play. The reason he had opted not to play was because of the language and actions of the team that had become acceptable. He wasn't comfortable with referees being confronted. He wasn't comfortable with f-bombs flying.

He told them the only way he would come back was that if the team and coaches all signed a football "contract" that they would not argue with the refs or use foul language at all without there being consequences. They agreed, and when I say they, I mean the entire team. They didn't lose again, and I will tell you it is not because Trevor came back to play, but rather because they took pride in being different and it unified them.

I tend to have a potty mouth now and then. My wife never cusses, and when I say never I mean it. I consider damn and hell minor at best on the curse word spectrum. In 25 years together I have heard her cuss 3 times, and I caused two of them. It is one of the things that makes her unique and beautiful to me.

I've never cared one way or the other about his use of language, but I wholeheartedly agree with @rcaldw that Landry not cussing made him unique and someone to admire. I hadn't considered it as an aspect Garrett might improve upon himself until he said it. I think it would be interesting for him to stand in front of his team and contract with them that he was going to give that up. If it was something he was going to work on to improve. He's capable of not swearing. He doesn't do it in interviews and PCs. I think his team would respect him for looking to conquer that aspect of his personality and like the kids did with Trevor, it could grow them closer as a team.

Just another thought on it.

Then, apologies were offered up all around, and another crises was averted...

So, Garrett's only weakness is that he cusses?

:rofl

My fucking God. People buy this absolute horseshit?

And BTW, just did quick and lazy Google and saw the high schools in St. John's. I see only one. Mascot...Redskins.

Hmmm. I bet his nephews didn't play there. Must have been another school.

He would deny a nephew his support because of his convictions. Sounds like something lifted out of a bad Western novel. Wait, it is.
