No sir, we don't call people that because we don't believe in being disrespectful in this state. We don't call anyone derogatory names here. However, there is a HS here that has it as a mascot. My wife's HS in fact. I had 3 nephews who played there and won 2 state championships. I would not go to their games because of the mascot name. They were supportive of my beliefs.
I ask you, if there was a derogatory name for Hispanics (and we know they exist) would it be okay to call a team mascot by that name and say it is to honor them? I really don't think so.
I know plenty of Native Americans who are offended by the word. It is true, some aren't. I just don't think it is right, and I wouldn't for any race. If you look it up in any Dictionary or Ontological reference it will tell you the name is a pejorative used to describe a race of people. How is that acceptable because we have conditioned ourselves to it?
For me, it just isn't. But I stress this again, that is me. The team and owner have racist ties and heritage. It seems very suspect to me to think about the mascot name he meant to honor when in no other way did he honor other races.
