When I have been in the market to buy a house, I specifically drop any house from consideration if they are part of an HOA. Fuck those commies.
Sometimes your only other non-HOA choice is a very inconvenient distance from where you want to commute every day.

We've accepted our HOA to be close to work and, earlier, good schools.

I live in a community of 28 homes.

There is little to no reason we have an HOA other than the “investors” with the big builder had one.

In my area, it is very rural and then boom, you are urban if you are not paying attention.

Sometimes the choice comes down to what you are literally willing to pay for.
