The Coronavirus Thread...

Trump cracks me up. He actually implied that the H1N1 event was a horrible time like this. It was barely a fucking blip on our national radar.

Yes it would and he says as much, not only because of the mistrust in Chinese info, but also because this thing is mutating and becoming more and more aggressive as viruses tend.

Good, honestly I'm still trying to finish this article, that bitch is LONG and detailed!

I bet only 1 in 100, if that, ever finish reading it much less comprehend everything

exactly I was completely, 100% oblivious to it at the time and quite honestly, its only because of C19 that I know what H1N1 even means

It's weird looking back how similar the symptoms were/are: Sudden inability to draw a full breath with a slight dry cough but no other symptoms, followed a few days later by violent cough that no med seems to tame, temperatures increasing daily up to 103.5+, inability to eat, almost surely a cytokine storm (according to my amateur reading), dizziness, and a trip to an ER facility and a pneumonia diagnosis. And my lungs still aren't right even months later.

FYI...

I really don't understand LT's view on this. My dad (who isn't quite as old) seems to think the same thing. I keep trying to convince him how serious this problem is.

I haven’t said the problem isn’t serious. What my position is and has been is don’t make a bad situation worse by creating panic in the minds of over reactionary people.

I've got two parts of my warring inside my head here.

One thing to do is to look at the trends in Italy, which are pretty scary. It is easy to dismiss things and pretend that its just the flu and the flu kills more. That's not the issue here. The issue is with how infectious this thing is. Apparently it is extremely infectious while spreading rapidly.

Italy had 793 die today, up 35% per day since the beginning. Run the number on that for 10 more days:

1075, 1445, 1951, 2633, 3555, 4800, 6480, 8748, 11810, 15944

That is the numbers for possible deaths PER DAY that could happen if it continues to rise the same amount each day. That is not really the entire story though. The real problem here is that is approximately 1.5% of those infected. 20% of the people infected need hospitalized, so we are talking staggering numbers that need help and will quickly overrun their medical system. That is where people who would have survived will die due to not being able to get treatment.

So I am watching NYC right now with intense interest. The are losing one per hour, let's do those numbers:

32, 43, 59, 79, 107, 145, 196, 264, 357, 482

So, if things keep tracking the way they are NYC could have up to 482 deaths per day within the next 10 days and continue upward. If that is true you better get your shit together because stuff is going to get bad under those circumstances. Hug your grandparents, old parents and respiratory compromised loved ones.

The point is, keeping your distance could slow the spread out enough to not overload the medical systems that we have. Cause we don't have 60 million respirators to help everyone.

Or, it could be nothing. Carry on.

NYC up to 39 deaths today. If the trend continues they will reach 482 deaths per day in the next 9 days.

Jus sayin...flaw in this 1-for-50-ventilator explanation is that the 150,000 ventilators are reusable, I’m assuming.

7.5M ppl aren’t simultaneously going to need 150,000 ventilators. Once a person dies/recovers, that ventilator can be passed on to the next person.

Assuming treatment last 2 weeks per ventilator (no idea if 2 weeks is accurate), that’s ~600,000 uses over the next 2 months.

4-in-50 is still tragic, just pointing out it’s not 1-in-50 :geek

That doesn't change the fact that we cold have a major medical crisis on our hands that will overrun our medical system. That will create many more deaths of people that don't even have the virus.

The availability will also depend upon n many other factors like geography.

thoughts:

This pencil gymnastics is pretty hard to swallow. China who says they are now getting past the curve and has a population many times over the United States has less than 4000 deaths from the Coronavirus. This physician is predicting that there could be a minimum of 47,000,000 deaths in the US which is almost 20% of the total population of the country. That’s the low end of the calculation. Even Italy who has the most deaths is less than 5000. So tell me if there seems to be some over the top panic in delivering this kind of reporting?

China has a population of 1.3 billion and the US has 331. Million. Why wouldn’t it be just as realistic to estimate and apply the China death rate of approximately 4000 to date to a percentage rate the us population? It is after all an exercise in statistics.

Partly because they took draconian measures that we as a free country won't (and shouldn't) do here.

Not to mention that we can't trust their numbers. They're doing anything they can to make it appear business is back to normal when it probably isn't.

Day 3 of working from home. I can tell you, this sucks. I mean, yes it's nice to not have to go into the office, but being at home and stuck to my laptop sucks.
