There are too many NFL teams with shit on the O-line that would probably pick him up just to stash and develop him. I actually wish they would have left Cornelius out at Tackle. We have kind of a glut of good players on the interior. Sounds like Keegan and Leverett have both played really well in preseason as well.

If they snatch him from our practice squad, doesn't he have to be on the active roster? I don't think any team would be willing to take a chance like that yet. He would be a complete liability.

Not sure on practice squad. I guess what I'm suggesting is that some other NFL team would probably pick him off waivers as soon as we cut him. Not because he is a good player. But because I think other teams thought he was a legitimate fourth round pick. There isn't enough tape for teams to have "changed their grades" that much. So I imagine some shit team like the Cardinals for example who are at the top of the waiver list and know they will suck would snatch a guy up like that hoping that they can develop in a year or two when the team has a chance to be competitive.

Yes, but there could be some really bad team with a longer-term plan willing to use a roster spot on a guy just to develop him.

On the other hand, I can't imagine anyone feeling that strongly about Drew Shelton.

And with the rules now, Jerry can pay a PS guy just as much as an active roster guy to get them to stay. That's what I hope happens with Pete.

With the weird practice squad promotion rules technically you can promote a guy to the active game day roster multiple times without actually adding them to your 53. Which allows some weird gymnastics to keep a guy like Shelton on the 53 but use someone on the practice squad in case of injury on game day. You can do this 3 times with any practice squad player before you have to actually move them to the active 53.

I'd be pretty surprised if a player who has enough talent to be a 4th round pick wouldn't be claimed from waivers in the same year he was drafted.

Rookie contract, big college program, physical talent that needs some seasoning, plays an extremely valuable position...I'm certain some team would be willing to carry him on their roster all year even as an unplayable backup if that's the case.
 
Shelton is definitely not good at all right now but we all knew he was a project. He played the entire Arizona game at LT and the offense went up and down the field.

That's enough for me to keep him on the 53 for now considering the options, but obviously I don't want him playing a single snap this year, and if we ever find ourselves in that position they'd better find another option.

What has Pete done to deserve to stay? Other than sounding like some wise old medicine man that caught the attention of the masses.

Yeah, the guy is a cool story. But unless he has been blowing the coaches away at practice which we haven't heard, I'm not seeing it. I see a big guy that could possibly develop on the PS in a year or two. Nothing I've seen in games tells me that he should take a spot on the 53.

Outside of the one cut up video of his superb effort vs 2nd/3rd string. This is the kind of guy you can build a great team culture with or even around.

He is going to work and give 100% effort from snap to whistle on every play. Not everyone does that, but it feels like he might be wired to do what the coaches tell him to do

So put him on the practice squad and let him give pep talks in the lockerroom. He hasn't shown enough to use up a valuable spot on the 53.
