I wouldn't say that.

It's fine as a city to live in. You have every resource you need here. For one thing, the food here is outstanding and that is probably what I would miss most about this place when I leave.

I was just clarifying to the "Houston is the greatest city EVAR!" guys about my saying there isn't much to do here.

Yes, there are things to do for those of us who live here, but nothing special or unique.

Houston fails miserably in comparison to cities in California, Florida, the upper east coast, etc.

There is absolutely nothing you can do here that you can't do in some other city, and there isn't anything for a tourist to come and see.

We had this exact conversation before. I threw some things out there off the top of my head, and it came down to you not really caring for those things. I will agree that it is not a tourist town, although there is always a festival of some sort happening.

As an aside, if I go to Galveston, it's not for the beach. It's for the Strand, Moody Gardens, or the Pleasure Pier. I enjoy Galveston.

As another aside, Dallas is the over-priced douchey haircut of Texas. Bai.

San Antonio is probably the closest thing to a tourist city in Texas other than the south Padre island resorts.

Obviously tourism depends on a person's interests, but I agree that SA has a little of everything.

I spent 3 years in San Antonio in the late 50s. Some of the area is essentially the same with the new layer of the world fair (or whatever it was called) improvements. The most notable changes are in the outlying areas of residential and shopping area. The biggest tourist addition is with the sea world and amusement parks. Aside from the riverwalk, sports arenas and the Alamo facelift, downtown is a lot the same.

Central Texas is the best part of the state, no doubt.

Austin is easily the best city and THAT is a Texas city that gives you a ton of things to do.

They really do have it made there. It's become a hip town that hosts events that are usually reserved for cities on the east and west coasts, and it's also a beautiful place in regards to its nature so you also have all the outdoors stuff to do as well.
 
And if you want BBQ, what better place to get it than central TX?

What the hell are you talking about there is plenty to do Houston all of my friends from out of state love visiting.

People travel to Houston now just for the great variety of food.

What the hell do people come and see in Dallas, if you can't show visitors a great time in Houston that says more about you than the city.

Anything you can do in Austin you can do in Houston, that shows you don't know much about the city.

It is not all centrally located but it is there.

I have to agree. Central Texas is teh bombz.

Plus if you live in the Austin area you're only about 3 hours away from most of the other major cities.

I actually find that hard to believe. I can't see anyone going out of their way to visit Houston for the food.

Places like New Orleans and Chicago, sure. But Houston? Maybe I'm missing something.

I generally agree with Ace's assessment. Houston is a great city but I've never heard a person who doesn't have Texas roots say they are planning a vacation to Houston.

That is an absolute lie.

Do they hold the SXSW festival here?

Did Houston all of a sudden develop caves for exploration? Do they have a lake that runs towards the city that you can enjoy at evening time that gives you a great view of downtown?

Dod Houston grow hills for hiking and jogging? Because last I checked, Houston didn't have any of that being as it is one of the flattest cities with almost no geographical variety to speak of.

Without even thinking about it, I just named a couple of very significant things you can do there that you can do here, and I can make that list grow even more without even trying too hard.
