I'm not the expert on what's a good handle or blade, but this is online at Walgreen's. Not sure if it's the same in-store.

I was planning on going to the Art of Shaving stores and playing around with the different ones they have.

From what I've read, you want a heavy handle so it provides enough pressure, eliminating you needing to press down and eliminates skin irritation.

Maybe @Rev and @L.T. Fan can attest that this single blade cuts down on skin irritation and gets you a closer shave vs the Mach 3's or 4's cartridges.

I've been thinking about going that route for a while now. While at the Mall of America a couple weeks ago, I found this store. http://www.theartofshaving.com/ I bought myself a shaving kit with the safety razor, and LOVE it. I only wish I had switched years ago. It's worth every penny. I went with the sandalwood scent. Smells like the old time barber shops.

I don't have much facial hair and thought the Art of Shaving pre-shave gel, fancy shave cream and badger brush were overkill for me. I just used a Mach 3 and Edge Pro Gel.

Although I still use the Mach 3, the other stuff provides such a closer shave and you feel like a Kennedy, all rich 'n sophisticated and shit.

I have mostly used gel shaving cream from a can. Or sometimes, the foam. And the disposable cartridges. Never again. That pre-shave gel and the shave lather with the badger brush along with the safety razor is f'n awesome. Feels and smells great.

And you are correct about wanting a heavier handle. It's best if you can go in a store and get the "feel" of their different razors. And yeah, you do just let the weight of the razor do the work. I was really scared about cutting the shit out of myself, but went slowly the first time just to get the hang of it. Didn't nick myself once, and got a really close shave. Each time since, I've been getting a little quicker as I get used to it. It's expensive to buy all the stuff to get started, but worth every penny, imo.

I use a Merkur razor with Feather blades. I have used many different shave soaps and creams with the badger brush. My favorite is probably Musgo Real shave cream. It lathers up thick and has pleasant scent like freshly cut grass. In a pinch, the Dial glycerin soaps work nicely and for cheap. Anything with glycerin or tallow will work. Leesrazors.com is a great resource for all that stuff.

And my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

I know this is going to get some reactions but you need to use your tounge to press out on the areas around your mouth. This allows the recesses around the mouth to be cleanly shaven. In addition stretching your skin as you shave makes the stubble stand up higher . It's called rolling the beard. Okay bring on the remarks.

Nothing wrong with that. Pretty standard when you have a single sharp blade instead of twelve dull blades and a roller pivot ball to dig into your flesh and obliterate all the hair while irritating your skin.

Electric razors I assume is what you are describing. I dislike them immensely.

You could start with a boar brush. You can find them cheap at Walmart or CVS.

You want to get an idea of the grain of your facial hair on different parts of your face. Everyone is a little different. Shave with the grain on your first pass, then if you need a second pass, go against. If i shave against the grain under my chin and neck, I get horrendous razor burn.

Check out the gift sets from Art of Shaving (link). You can also buy the badger brush by itself on the website. There are different qualities of badger hair (link) -- I have the low grade just to try it out. Or, just type in 'badger brush' into Amazon and you can get it online.

I've been putting out the name Art of Shaving just because they seem to be in every shopping mall and, although I have no comparison, their products have worked well. Some of the experts here may poo-poo Art of Shaving and recommend going with a particular brand at a specialty shop/online - ahem, [MENTION=85]Kbrown[/MENTION]

I make two passes - first one with the grain (downwards) and, in the trickier spots, make a second pass against the grain (upwards). Under my chin, though, my hair grows sideways and so it becomes shaving left-to-right and vice versa.

I think the pre-shave gel/oil has helped me reduce razor burn (link).
