Princess and Norwegian have been very good when I have gone on them. Even Royal Caribbean has done okay.

Going on a Carnival cruise is like going to McDonalds and saying "well, that hamburger was just not very good".

I get that. It was a group deal with some buddies. My friend has been on 10 cruises. He's been on all the trips, so I pretty much just followed his lead. I had no idea about any of it.

Still, the concept of a cruise just doesn't appeal to me much. A giant nightclub that floats in the water...eh, not my thing.

A coupla women showed me their boobs amd tried to give me a handy though. Don't walk the top deck at 3am unless you want the clap.

You got that impression because that's Carnival's plan. They are cheap cause they are considered a young adult cruise line. They want you to buy cheap tickets to get on the boat and then spend the rest on alcohol and gambling. I've had fun on them but it gets old after a while.

The others mentioned give you a more wide range of things to do and better food. Disney is unstoppable in terms of food quality but a lot of activities are more geared towards kids.

One of my buddies said that it was vacation for poor people. I agree.

They took their own booze on the ship via monster cans with screw on lids and mouthwash bottles with food coloring in it. Ridiculous amounts of alcohol were consumed.
 
I've done Carnival 4 times and I've always enjoyed it, and you can't beat the price. Obviously if I was rich like Skid and Unc I could afford to do all inclusives in the French Riviera or whatever but I can't.

But I went with a couple friends last year. We had three people in a room and it cost us a base price of like $350 a person for the week. You can't beat that. You get accomodations that are on par with like, Holiday Inn, and you get food that is on par with Golden Corral at the buffet or Applebees at seated dinner.

If I'm on land, I could spend $350 for a single night at a Hampton Inn in NYC, or damn close to it. Instead, I got a week of room, food, and nightly entertainment for that price. Was the piano bar or night clubs really that awesome?

No, but I saw 3-4 good comedy shows, watched a couple movies, and then paid for drinks as I went, which is reasonable. Just hanging out and seeing the sights was enough of a diversion to be a good vacation.

Where I splurged was on shore... yeah, seeing Mexicans for 4 hours might suck, but I booked 2 snorkeling excursions and saw some amazing stuff. Those of you who are friended on facebook can see it.

It was definitely worth the $350 I spent getting there. And then the $50-$100 per excursion.

I agree with you. I've been to Cozumel 3 times on cruises. Once we just stayed in the city and hit the bars. It was ok, but only cause I can do that anywhere. The other two times I went to the Mayan ruins and went scuba diving. Those are two things I may never do again which made the time in Mexico worth it.

Also, good tip if you want to relax in Mexico but be treated like a king. The Presidente Hotel is not far by cab from the port and they rent their rooms by the hour. Get a nice room that comes with a private beach and private waiter that runs over to you in the sand when you send the signal. It was a good time.

I didn't hate the cruise. Part of it was that we were stuck on the ship for 8 hours longer than we were supposed to be and I was freakin tired when it was over.

We did a bunch of fancy exersions when I went to Cancun. It was cool and all but I like going to see the local culture in all honesty. It pisses me off when I go out of the states to find American places to eat amd hang out. I'm not there for that. I can drive 30 minutes to the river walk to do that. Not my deal at all.

That cancun trip ruined me. The place was super nice. I could have paid $18,000 for 60 lifetime weeks there. It is worth every penny IMO. Of course they are banking on the fact that you probably won't come back that many times. I'd have to look into what the restrictions are. I'm sure there are some.

That is more my speed honestly. Mix in a few activities and I am set in that situation. I don't need non-stop entertainment to be happy. I'm looking to get away from stress and have a good, relaxing time.
 
I want to go on a cruise in May/June, but I would never get on a Carnival Cruise.

So how about you all hook a brother up with some Norwegian Line tickets?

You could hold a fundraiser or a pot luck or something in honor of my contributions to this site

I did that. You were on horseback, I assume? One thing that was great was we were used to guided horseback tours in the States, but those Mexicans in Cozumel didn't give a shit if you let 'er rip on the horse and acted like the goddamn Lone Ranger. I pounded several Coronitas waiting for the bus to return, then a couple of big margaritas back in town. I was referred to as "El Borracho" by the locals for the rest of the day. :unsure

Overall on Royal Caribbean we had a nice experience, but we also had a cabin with a balcony, so that helped the onboard time. Boat time was a bit boring overall but it was nice to relax. I ate entirely too much on that trip though. The excursions were mostly pretty cool, especially snorkeling in the Grand Cayman Islands. Amazing.

All in all I'd probably prefer to go to an island resort and stay put as opposed to taking a cruise, but it was right for our situation. We got married on the ship, had a reception in one of the lounges, and then went on a cruise for 7 days. It was nice.

Well yes, obviously if you can do a land or island-based all inclusive resort, that is better than island hopping on a cruise. The rooms can be bigger because you're not on a ship, the food options more varied, the alcohol is usually included, and you aren't rushed to get back from your excursions because your hotel isn't about to float away.

They also cost five to ten times more.

Not necessarily if you know where to look. You can get a nice cabin the the Dominican jungle overlooking the ocean surrounded by monkeys for very cheap. I think we got a real nice one for around $75 a night and airfare to get there was minimal.
