Sturm: Let’s Cut the Cowboys Roster to the Final 53

Wouldn't shock me if they did this with the thought that they can get Camden Brown to the practice squad. And I get it. Undrafted player, wasn't even a top UDFA to most people. I know I never heard of the guy. So post draft, it would appear the guy's best hope was to make the practice squad.

The problem is everything he has done since than has said otherwise. And so I'm not really sure if a team would pick him up or not. It's not like other NFL teams are sitting in and watching our training camp. So while us fans think highly of him I can acknowledge that most teams are going to look at their draft grades and then maybe combine it with the preseason performance we have seen. Is that going to be enough for another team to claim him? I don't know.

But Mingo, I have no fear of anyone picking him up.
Zero chance Brown gets through waivers. Too much film of him making plays. Try to get Mingo to practice squad, if some one gets him, who really gives a fuck. This is a guy who has done absolutely nothing his entire fuckin career. I'm supposed to think he's figured it out in year 4?

The team would be stupid to expose him to waivers. I don't think he will clear them. But, I can absolutely see them doing something retarded this offseason. They have been far too sensible so far. Had to know the other shoe would eventually drop.

You don’t have a guy like Brown who you expose, not when he has exposed himself.

As much as teams love to say scout they everyone (they fucking don’t) but he has made enough noise to be noticed to the point that a team with a shit WR room will snag him based off his preseason performances.

This is what I think as well. But this organization exposed Flournoy last year who I thought had shown some obvious signs that he could be a pretty damn good receiver and somehow no one picked him up. So while it seems obvious to me that some team should claim Brown I feel like there is a lot of confusion that goes on at these final cuts. Many teams are struggling with decisions while also looking at the waiver wire for guys that shouldn't have been cut. And those teams have their own "Camden Brown" type decisions.

Personally I make it simple. Who has been the best WR on the roster after the top 3? If it's Camden Brown, I'm not exposing him for the sake of Mingo on special teams, or Turpin on Special teams or whatever. That's stupid. You need a fourth receiver because they are one injury away from playing a lot of offensive snaps. Brown looks like the guy who is most ready to do that.

And again, I know most of us haven't liked Mingo since the stupid trade for him. He has shown more this preseason than we have ever seen. But his problem is sort of the opposite of Camden Brown. He has great long speed but seems to have no short area quickness or change of direction. The difference is Camden Brown makes the crazy catches look easy. And while he won't get separation on a deep ball that seems to be such a small percent of the NFL game. And even without the separation I feel better about Camden Brown catching that deep ball one on one over Mingo getting separation.

Dallas has six talented WRs, apparently. Mingo and Brown are two outside guys with starting potential, while Lamb, Pickens, Flournoy, and Turpin fill each very specific roles. Do you need two depth guys?

I always felt the answer was yes, especially if either can play on ST's. I prefer six WR's, because you can run five-wide formations with all receivers in the face of injury, family emergency, sickness, or suspension. You still could with TE's or backs, but I also like being able to run deep shots on successive plays without worrying about who got tired-- just rotate in another guy.

If you expose one now, past results aside, you will lose him. With the coverage Dallas gets, there's nowhere to hide them.

Part of the problem to is that I don't really view Turpin as a real receiver. He is a gadget guy. He can catch a deep pass here or there with his speed. But for the most part he isn't a guy you want operating full time at receiver. And with the amount an offense uses three receivers at one time it sort of tells me he shouldn't really be relied on as your next man up.

If you take Turpin out of the equation to some extent, you're really talking about your fourth receiver when talking Brown and Mingo.

This is the equivalent to me of going short at safety while at the same time counting Marques Bell as one of the safeties. Truth is Bell is making the depth chart at safety because of what he does on special teams. Not because he is your next best safety. Sure he can play some in a pinch. But for any extended period of time he isn't really someone you want back there.

I'm not super worried about what happens with Brown if I'm being honest.
I’m not either. Every year teams lament having to cut fringe guys, scared they won’t make it through waivers. Some don’t. Most do. But when is the last time we lost a guy at cut downs that went on to be a stud somewhere else? I honestly can’t remember.

I'm certainly not going to lose sleep over it. I can't remember the last time one of these camp cuts really came to bite us in the ass. The closest I can remember to that is Ward but we actually traded him and didn't cut him so I'm not sure that counts. Still the Chiefs got a lot more out of him than we did the scrub O-lineman we swapped him for.

I like the player but the odds are still stacked against him becoming anything more then depth in the NFL.

Yep. I like him, too. And hope there is a way to keep him. IMO, he’s shown enough and I’d like to see if that continues on this team. But like you said, odds are against him.
